VISION

The American River College Honors Program is a community of students and faculty who are dedicated to the pursuit of intellectual and personal enrichment in an open and challenging academic environment.

MISSION

The mission of the ARC Honors Transfer Program is to:

  • invite participation by all students and faculty who desire a more rigorous and challenging alternative to general education requirements.
  • recognize students who set and expect higher standards of teaching and learning, culminating in greater involvement and achievement in the educational process.
  • provide strong general education preparation for students who wish to transfer to highly selective public and private universities.
  • enable students to complete the requirements for an Associate of Arts degree through a selective curriculum of Honors courses.
  • encourage a greater degree of self-directed intellectual inquiry and discovery by students in consultation and communication with dedicated faculty.
  • enhance a sense of community among students and faculty both inside and beyond the classroom.
  • emphasize advanced development of skill in critical thinking, comprehension, and oral and written expression.
  • expand and deepen student awareness of the broad areas of human knowledge that contributes to purposeful and meaningful lives as members of a global community.
  • acknowledge the accomplishments of highly motivated, self-directed individuals in advanced academic settings through the awarding of degrees and certificates.

PHILOSOPHY

  • The focus of the ARC Honors Transfer Program is on student learning, intellectual growth, and fulfillment of personal and academic goals.
  • Students and faculty engage in a collaborative process of intellectual activity that contributes to an appreciation of a liberal education as an instrument in the lifelong process of learning.
  • The program expects students and faculty alike to seek and expect excellence in the classroom setting.
  • Participation in the program fosters a sense of community in which all who are interested and motivated will be received in an environment of mutual respect and trust.
  • The program encourages the belief that respect for a wide diversity of cultures and perspectives enriches our community and adds significantly to the process of learning.
