AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE
Guidelines for Admission of Advanced Education Students

Print Application Form
Print Guidelines & Instructions

The advanced education program is intended to provide students who are under the age of 18 (and have no high school diploma) with advanced educational opportunities at the college level.

Who can enroll in advanced education classes?

  • You must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.7 or higher from your school, except when enrolling in designated special programs approved by the college.
  • You must be 16 years old or have completed the sophomore year of high school by the first day of class.

What courses are excluded from the advanced education program?

  • Remedial courses (including all courses numbered 1-99).
  • Courses that need to be repeated due to unsatisfactory grades (D or F) received at your school.
  • Courses available at your school during the same semester in which you wish to enroll at ARC. However, if you are enrolled in the maximum units your school permits, you may enroll in a college course, even if it is available at your school during the same semester.
  • General education classes that are typically offered in your own school, i.e., English, math, etc. This applies to courses offered in public, private, and home-school settings.
  • Courses where your safety or the safety of others would be jeopardized.
  • Courses where your ability and the ability of others to benefit from instruction may be compromised due to course requirements, the mature nature of the subject matter, and/or the learning environment.

What else do I need to know about the advanced education program?

  • The course credit and grades you receive will become part of your permanent college record.
  • You will not be charged enrollment fees unless you are a non-resident or international student. However, you must pay the Universal Transit Pass fee (see the Schedule of Classes for details).
  • You must complete the orientation process if this is your first semester. You will be given information about orientation when you call to set up your counseling session.
  • You are strongly encouraged to take the assessment exam in reading, writing, and math.
  • You must meet all course prerequisites to enroll in a course.
  • Returning advanced education students are NOT considered continuing students. When you graduate from high school and enroll at ARC or any Los Rios College, you will then be considered a new student (not continuing).
  • If you have already taken college courses, you must maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A. in those classes in order to be allowed to take additional classes as an advanced education student.

Steps to Take for Advanced Education Students
The following steps MUST be taken in order to apply and register for advanced education classes at American River College:
  • Each of the steps below should be completed well in advance of the first day of class.
  • If you have not received approval from an ARC counselor before the first day of instruction for the class(es) you wish to take, your application will be denied.
  • If you have not received approval from an ARC counselor before the first day of instruction, you may still apply for a late-starting class that begins later in the semester.

STEP 1:

ARC Application
Submit an online application by going to the ARC website at
www.arc.losrios.edu and clicking on "prospective student" followed by "apply."

  • Indicate on the application that you are an Advanced Education student and not a new student, transfer student, or a continuing student.

STEP 2:

School Counselor
Meet with your school counselor and determine what class(es) would be appropriate for you to take at ARC. You may take six (6) units per semester or two classes (which may exceed 6 units).

  • Clearly list the class(es) on the Advanced Education application as recommended by your school counselor.
  • Obtain a signature from your school counselor or administrator.

STEP 3:

School Transcript
Obtain a copy of your current school transcript showing all coursework and verifying that you have a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or higher. Transcript should show proof of birth date.

NOTE: If your school offices will be closing for all or part of the summer and you are applying for the summer and/or fall sessions at ARC, you will need to make arrangements to obtain your current school transcripts prior to your school's closure. You must also meet with your school counselor to obtain course recommendations and confirmation/signature.

STEP 4:

Parental Permission
Obtain a signature from one of your parents/guardians.

STEP 5:

Written Statement
Bring in a written statement describing how you meet the criteria for advanced education and why you want to take a class or classes at ARC.

STEP 6:

College Transcript
If you have taken other college classes, obtain a copy of your transcript from the college (or access online and print) showing the grades received from those classes.

STEP 7:

Home School Students
If you are attending a home school that is not affiliated with a public school district, you must also bring in a copy of your private school affidavit.

STEP 8:

Assessment Exam
If you wish to take a class that has a pre-requisite of English or math, take the ARC assessment exam. Call (916) 484-8423 for testing times or view online at
www.arc.losrios.edu/stusrvc/assessment.html.

STEP 9:

ARC Orientation Session/Counseling Session
You will be required to attend a new student orientation session if this is your first semester at ARC. Call the Counseling Center at (916) 484-8572 to inquire about orientation times and appointments and/or drop in counseling availability. Bring the signed Advanced Education form, your transcript(s), your written statement, and your assessment scores (if appropriate) to your ARC counseling session.

STEP 10:

Registration
If the ARC counselor approves your course request, you may register for class(es) during Priority 2 Registration or during Open Registration.

  • You must register in person at e-Services and prior to the start of the first class session.
  • Be prepared to show documents providing proof that the ARC counselor approved your Advanced Education application.

STEP 11:

Each Semester
If you plan to take other classes in subsequent semesters, you will need to complete steps 2-10 each semester. You will not be considered a continuing student. You will also need to complete a supplemental information form online before enrolling for the next semester.
