Lady Beavers struggle

The Lady Beavers second half struggles came back to haunt them in the season finale Feb. 15, at American River College, as they let another close game slip through their fingers in the final minutes falling to cross-town rival Sacramento City College 55-51.

Down 14-10 early in the first half, ARC went on a 9-0 run, led by Melissa Rice and Lashana Ingraham. They took the lead and held it until 4:26 remaining when the Panthers Morgan Hunter hit a 3- pointer to tie the game.

Tied 27-27 with .3 seconds to go Ashley Schmidt dropped a half ending three of her own putting the Beavers up at halftime 30-27.

In the second half the Lady Beavers played solid basketball on both sides

of the ball scoring baskets and playing defense but that later stalled.

The Lady Beavers began picking up the pace early on and with a couple of 3-pointers by sophomores Nicole Voigt and Cassie Baxter, ARC found themselves up by eight with 5:00 to go 47-39.

Seemingly in the driver’s seat, ARC couldn’t buy a basket for the remainder of the game nor get passed the hard pressing SCC defense. The Panthers change of defensive schemes also seemed to have stunned the Beavers squad as well.

“We got caught on our heels,” said second year guard Melissa Rice. “We weren’t ready for the man to zone”.

Missed lay ups and careless turnovers down the stretch unfortunately

contributed to the lady Beavers loss.

“Our good people just didn’t perform,” said Rice. “It’s a big disappointment”.

The Beavers bid farewell to its seven sophomores all of whom were playing in their final collegiate game. Co Captain Cassie Baxter ended her career on a good note, leading all scorers with a game high 17 points, with 10 of those coming in the first half.

Baxter stated that, it was an amazing season despite the poor record.

“We played hard and the friendships on and off the court can’t be beat,” Baxter said.

The Lady Beavers finish the season 6-21, with an in conference record of 2-10.
