Strong support in renewal of RT pass

Students overwhelmingly voted to extend the Universal Transit Pass contract with Regional Transit for another 10 years.

Over 92 percent of Los Rios Community District students voted yes on this contract.   Although the majority of students voted yes, the turnout itself was quite small. Approximately 2,000 students showed up at the polls to represent over 96,000 students in the Los Rios Community District.

"I'm glad it passed," said student Angela Woods. "It's a big help to a lot of students and although I only use it occasionally, it's handy."

Starting in the fall of 2007 all students will be charged a fee each semester, except for the summer session, when registering for classes. Students enrolled in 12 units or more will be charged $15 per semester, students enrolled in six to 11.99 units will be charged $10 per semester, and students enrolled in 0 to 5.99 units will pay $5 per semester. BOG waiver students will pay $7.50, $5 and $2.50 respectively.

Those fees will remain in effect for at least five years and are a bargain compared to the normal Regional Transit monthly rate of $85 per month or $425 per month.

A student in the Los Rios Community College District would save $410 per month.

"Without it, I would not be coming here," said Student Association President Scott Cunha.

Students that would be exempt from paying the fees would be students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Training Consortium (CJTC), students in the Apprenticeship program, students enrolled and taking classes on the U.C. Davis main, and students that are studying abroad. Students taking all online classes must still pay the fee but are eligible to petition for a refund.
