Alternate Media

American River College is pleased to announce the arrival of alternate media to our campus as another way to encourage our students success.

Working with instructors, publishers, and other Community Colleges across California we can provide students access to their textbooks in a digital format.

Types of Alternate Media:

Braille, Tactile Graphics (a "touchable" form of a picture), Audio Tapes, Large Print.

Braille:
Disability Services has a Braille printer, as well as translation software available in the Alternative Tech Center in the Student Services Building.

Audio Tapes:
Disability Services can provide material in audio format for study and testing purposes. Please contact Disability Services for more information.

Large Print:
For individuals with a moderate visual disability, large print tests are often desirable.
Large print should be about 24 point font.

Mp3 conversion: American River College can create audio forms of textbooks that can be played using a portable listening device.

Alternate Media can be made available in different formats such as: Microsoft Word Files, PDF (Portable Document Format) files, or plain ASCII text files.

All these forms of alternate media can used in conjunction with specific software offered at American River College. In addition Disabled Student Services, and Learning Disabilities Staff have in place around the campus lab locations where students can utilize: Kurzweil 3000, Kurzweil 1000, Inspiration 7.5 as well as others that can help students succeed.

If you are interested in finding out if Alternate Media could help you, contact your counselor before the semester starts.
