Auxiliary & Blind/Visually Impaired Support Services

Without the power of sight? Let us empower you. Our staff will help you to function within the college environment by building self esteem and assisting you, the student, to perform independently. We will help you to function academically within a college environment by providing all the support services at our disposal.

Auxiliary & Blind/ Visually Impaired Support Services Include:

  • In-Class Aides: who perform a variety of academic related duties in the classroom for their assigned students. For example they provide “hands-on” assistance in computer or laboratory classes as well as assist with in-class work assignments.
  • Out-of-Class Aides: who perform multiple tasks within several areas and need not have knowledge of a particular course. They may assist a student with computer usage, going over course material, or helping with research. Aides do not assist with homework or provide typing services.
  • Tutors: engage in an interactive process designed to help students with disabilities meet their academic requirements. They must have the qualifications necessary to help students with their studies and assignments by providing individualized attention and educational coaching to ensure academic success.
  • Note-takers: assist students who have extreme difficulty taking notes in class due to a perceptual, motor, or cognitive impairment.

Adaptive Tech Center:

• Duxbury Braille Software Program: for translating text into Braille.
• Braille Printer: prints Braille text onto Braille paper.
• Hand Operated Brailler.
• Zoom Text: a screen enhancement software tool for students with visual impairment.
• Jaws: a voice synthesized screen reader designed especially for students with blindness or visually impairment.
• Tactile Graphics: a thermal-embossing technique that raises images such as circles and squares onto specialized paper.
• Text to MP3: an exciting way to take your textbooks with you! (requires MP3 Player)
