Scholarships

Scholarship assistance gives you an opportunity to enhance the life of a deserving American River College student. Scholarships have been established through the generosity of businesses, associations and individuals. These scholarships reward student achievement, encourage student leadership and accomplishment, and provide needed financial assistance.

Scholarships have been instituted to honor or remember family, friends or organizations. Some scholarships are created to provide trained professionals in needed fields of study. For whatever reason, financial assistance helps students receive the necessary education to compete in today’s world. List of current scholarships.

How is a scholarship established?

A scholarship can be established in two forms:

  • Annual scholarships can be established with a one-time contribution or as an annual scholarship to a student or students. The scholarship may be renewed each year with an annual gift from a donor.  Guidelines/Form for Scholarship Establishment.
  • Endowments have the advantage of providing funds for the scholarship in perpetuity, but do require a minimum amount of $10,000 to establish and to activate.

What happens when a scholarship is established?

Scholarships are known by a name designated by the donor.

Recipients are selected annually by a scholarship committee of faculty, staff, administrators and students.

The names of endowed scholarship recipients are announced at the yearly Awards Night, held in the spring.

What is an endowed scholarship?

A scholarship endowment fund is administered according to the following provisions:

  • When the principal of the endowment reaches the specified amount (normally $10,000) or more, the endowment will be activated, and the selection of awards will begin. Prior to activation of the scholarship, all annual interest and earnings from the investment of the fund will be returned to the corpus to help achieve the activation goal.
  • If for any reason the endowment fund does not reach at least the agreed goal within a two-year period, the foundation may choose either to extend the pre-activation period or to implement individual scholarship awards.
  • Endowment spending objectives satisfy needs for sufficient funds for scholarships and other grant efforts, preserve the principal against inflation, and provide a predictable and growing stream of income.
  • Investment of the principal of each endowment shall be handled in accordance with foundation investment policies, with the goal of achieving maximum earnings for each fund. Written records of the performance of each endowment are kept in the ARC Foundation office.

How will students know about the scholarship?

The availability of the scholarship, specifying the guidelines and the sponsor, is listed on the ARC website in early January.

How are the scholarships monitored?

Scholarships funds are distributed in the summer in time to pay for educational expenses  in the fall term. The Financial Aid Office checks to see that the students have met the scholarship criteria before funds are distributed.

How are the scholarships awarded?

Each spring, the college holds Scholarship Awards Night.  Donors or their representatives are invited to attend and meet their recipients.
