Job Opportunities
The continued growth of suburban residential areas, the growth of gardening as a major leisure time activity, and the demand for park and recreational greenbelt areas all provide challenging opportunities to those who choose careers in horticulture.

With the growing interest in protecting and enhancing the environment and the increased demand for park and recreation green belts, employment opportunities for horticulturists look bright. Employment opportunities should grow in both industry and government agencies as environmental research leads to new laws and standards for protecting the environment.

Nursery Industry Careers
Whether your goal is to earn an Associate of Science Degree or a Certificate, the American River College Horticulture Department prepares students for a variety of employment opportunities in California's thriving nursery industry.

Horticulture plant production is a growing industry in the Sacramento area. Many growers already have established production nurseries in and around Sacramento and    with Southern California and San Francisco Bay Area land values skyrocketing,   growers in these areas are looking toward the Sacramento and upper San Joaquin Valleys as new sites for plant production.    Program graduates have the opportunity to work in a variety of areas including propagation, inventory control and wholesale sales.

Sacramento's climate provides local gardeners with the envious distinction of being able to grow a wide variety of   plants ranging from trees and shrubs to colorful perennials, annuals and bulbs.   Many students gain their first on-the-job experience working in one of the area's many retail nurseries.   Garden Center staff provide the customer with valuable services including plant selection and care, pest control and plant nutrition recommendations and the use of garden accessories.   Many former students are currently employed in and around Sacramento as sales professionals and   several graduates are in managerial positions.
