General Information
American River College is a two-year community college, fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It is located in a suburban area approximately 10 miles northeast of Sacramento, the Capital of the State of California. The nearest major city is San Francisco which is about 90 miles West.The City of Sacramento is located about halfway between San Francisco (to the West) and Reno/Lake Tahoe (to the east). The area offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities. Residents of Sacramento enjoy a small-town atmosphere with all of the urban conveniences. With a reasonable cost of living, beautiful neighborhoods and a mild climate, Sacramento is one of California's finest places to live.
American River College, is a part of the Los Rios Community College District, which also includes Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College. The Los Rios Community College District is one of the best in the United States and offers a wide range of interesting and innovative programs. Our graduates transfer to California State University, Sacramento, University of California, Davis, and the University of the Pacific which are three universities located nearby.
Sports fans here enjoy the home games of the Sacramento Kings basketball team; the women's basketball team, the Monarchs; the River Rats (hockey), and the Knights (soccer). Most recently, a new AAA baseball team, the River Cats, have made their debut, playing at Raley Field in West Sacramento.
Music enthusiasts can listen to a wide variety of radio stations with jazz, pop, rock, Hispanic, rap, and classical music, as well as local, state, and international news. There are seven local television stations, and a daily newspaper, the Sacramento Bee. Newspapers and magazines from many countries are sold at a number of Sacramento-area newsstands and bookstores. Sacramento also has its own Zoo, the Crocker Art Museum, and Folsom Lake State Recreational Area. You'll find lots of things to do in Sacramento.
American River College does not offer housing to its students. However, apartment and house rentals are very reasonable. Most students use automobiles for transportation to and from school, although public transportation (bus and light-rail) is available at low cost. You can find out about available apartments by visiting the Student Services Center or the International student office.
