Suggested sequence of classes leading to an Associate of Arts degree:

It is anticipated that students may begin their legal assisting studies in either the Fall or the Spring semester. The current plan includes offering the LA 300 Introduction to the Law and Legal Assisting course both Fall and Spring semesters, afternoons and evenings. Successful completion of the AA degree requirements will allow the student to transfer to any CSU campus as a Junior.

All required  Legal Assisting courses (Core Requirements)  are available to be taken either in the afternoon or the evening. At this time, all Legal Assisting electives (Concentration Requirements) are scheduled as evening classes.

A suggested course of study for students who have no prior college experience might be as follows:

Semester 1 -- Fall:
  • ENGWR 300 College Composition, 3 units
  • Foreign language class, 4 units
  • ANTH 300 Physical Anthropology, 3 units
  • HIST 320 History of the US/African American, 3 units
  • CISA 320, 321 Database Management (2 units)
Semester 2 -- Spring:
  • PSYC 300 General Principles, 3 units
  • ENGRD 310 College Analytical & Speed Reading, 3 units
  • STAT 300 Introduction to Probability & Statistics, 3 units
  • CISA 300, 301, 302 Word Processing, 3 units
  • PSYC 361 Psych of Women in a Multi-Cultural Society, 3 units

The above students could then continue in the pattern that follows. The second two-semester sequence is appropriate for those students who have already completed 30 units of acceptable general education requirements.

Semester 3 -- Fall:
  • LA 300 Intro to the Law & Legal Assisting, 3 units
  • LA 320 Legal Research, 3 units
  • LA 312 Torts and Personal Injury, 3 units
  • Electives, 6 units (Concentration Requirements
Semester 4 -- Spring:
  • LA 314 Contract Law for Legal Assistants, 3 units
  • LA 321 Legal Writing, 3 units
  • LA 310 Civil Litigation and Procedure, 3 units
  • Electives, 6 units (Concentration Requirements

Students following the above course of study would satisfy the ARC graduation requirements for the A.A. degree and would have met many of the requirements of the three transfer pattern alternatives. It is always advisable to meet with an academic counselor to determine appropriate courses for transfer.

Students desiring to take the Legal Assisting courses only part time should select courses from the first ones listed each semester. For example, if you wish to take only one class in the Fall semester you should choose LA 300, then in the Spring take LA 314.
