The following is a representative list of the requirements for each level of applied jazz study at A.R.C. Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of these requirements at the end-of-semester jury prior to advancement to the next level of study.


Wind Instruments:

 

1st Semester (MUIVI 425) -Jazz Applied

 

·       All diatonic modes and arpeggios, through range of instrument, in eighth notes at Q=120 around the cycle.

 

·       Memorize four jazz standards. (See suggested list at end of page)

 

·       Students should prepare a transcribed jazz solo of at least one chorus, appropriate to their ability level and course of study.  The transcription is to be performed by memory along with the recording at their applied jury.

 

2nd Semester (MUIVI 426) -Jazz Applied

 

·       All modes and arpeggios of melodic minor, through range of instrument, in eighth notes at Q=120 around the cycle.

 

·       Memorize four jazz standards. (See suggested list at end of page)

 

·       Students should prepare a transcribed a jazz solo of at least one chorus, appropriate to their ability level and course of study.  The transcription is to be performed by memory along with the recording at their applied jury.

Jazz Voice

 

1st Semester (MUIVI 425) -Jazz Applied

 

·       Student will memorize four jazz standards and sing them in public.

·       Student will sing the root motion of each of the above-mentioned jazz standards

·       Student will sing the appropriate chord scales for the above-mentioned jazz standards.

·       Student will sing one chorus of an instrumental improvisation as assigned by the instructor.

·       Student will sing around the circle of fourths three different types of scales as assigned by the instructor.

 

2nd Semester (MUIVI 426) -Jazz Applied

·       Student will memorize four jazz standards and sing them in public.

Drums

 

1st Semester (MUIVI 425) – Jazz Applied

 

·       Ability to read syncopated jazz rhythms (see Progressive Steps to

Syncopation by Ted Reed)

·       Basic timekeeping proficiency in bebop/swing style, Bossa Nova and Samba.

·       Play Comp examples 1 and 3 in The Art of Bop Drumming at 180 bpm.

·       Trade fours and eights

·       Play One-bar Phrases in The Art of Bop Drumming

·       Transcribe 16 bars of Max Roach time playing

 

2nd Semester (MUIVI 426) – Jazz Applied

 

·       Ability to set up jazz rhythm figures in big band style (see Studio

·       and Big Band Drumming by Steve Houghton)

·       Solo on blues or rhythm changes forms

·       Transcribe 16 bars of Max Roach or Philly Joe Jones solo

·       Ability to play ballad or swing time with brushes

·       Be able to play all materials in The Art of Bop Drumming
