Who
Can Be A Music Major?
Music majors must meet the following requirements:
1. Acceptance into American River College
2. Successful audition into the music major program through a live
audition.
3. Concurrent enrollment in music theory and a large performance
ensemble.
When
Are Auditions Held?
The student's end-of-semester jury will be used for their continuation
in the
applied music program. This will occur during finals week. Entering
freshmen and
transfer students will also be auditioning during this time. Only
40 positions are
available in this new program. The audition committee will select
students from a
range of disciplines. Students not selected for entrance or continuation
in the new
applied program may still enter or continue as music majors, but
must pay
for their own private instruction.

Who
Are The Applied Instructors?
All candidates for applied instructor positions must file an application
with the
district and be interviewed by a small hiring committee. Upon successful
completion
of this process, the instructor will become a member of the Los
Rios instructor pool.
All candidates must qualify under one of the following categories:
1. An earned Master's Degree in Music from an accredited institution.
2. An earned Bachelor's Degree in Music and an earned Master's in
Humanities
from an accredited institution.
3. The equivalent education based on professional years of experience
in the field
of the applied assignment. Candidates applying for equivalencymust
submit a
biography and any additional materials supporting their professional
experience.
These materials will be evaluated by the hiring committee.
What
Are The Areas Of Applied Instruction?
American River College has applied instructors in the following
disciplines:
Voice
All Brass
All Woodwinds
All Strings
Piano
Organ
Percussion
Jazz Voice
Jazz Brass
Jazz Woodwinds
Jazz Strings
Jazz Keyboard
Jazz Percussion

How Are Applied Instructors Paid?
1. Instructors for 40 music majors will be paid by the district.
These students
will enroll in MUIVI 420 and select a teacher from an approved ARC
list.
2. These students are welcome to pay the instructor for additional
lessons.
However, the student may notpay the instructor an additional fee
for the
lessonswhich are already paid for by the district.
3. Additional students may still enroll as music majors and take
music
majorclasses, but must pay for their own private instruction (as
is currently done).
How Is Payment Rendered?
1. Instructors for 40
music majors will be paid directly by the
district once permonth.
If a student fails to attend their lesson, payment for that student
will cease upon
being dropped from the course.
2. Additional students must arrange for their own instructor payment.

Where
And When Are Lessons Held?
Lessons are held at a time and location that is convenient for both
the
student and instructor.
What
Are The Duties Of Applied Music Students?
1. Seven hours of private instruction per student/ per semester.
Seven/ one
hour/ biweekly lessons or 14/ one-half hour/ weekly lessons.
2. Performance at an end-of-semester jury.
3. Performance at an approved ARC campus recital.
4. Concurrent enrollment in music theory and a large performance
ensemble.
5. On campus practice five and one-half hours per week. An ARC faculty
member will check the student into a practice room, be available
during the
practice time, and check the student out of the room at the end
of the practice
time. Practice times are available between 8AM - 5PM, Monday
through Thursday and 8AM - 4PM on Friday.

Where
Do I Get Additional Information?
1. Dr. Gilman is the coordinator of the applied music program.
2. The instructional assistant will coordinate juries and recitals,
and
will maintain contact with the applied instructions.
3. Priscilla Perrault is the counselor for music majors.
4. All full time faculty will be responsible for practice room check
in/out.
5. Updates and student messages will be posted on the applied music bulletin board.
