BEAVERS TAKE DOWN PIRATES 10-8

American River College defeated the Modesto Junior College Pirates 10-8 at Beaver Field on Thursday.  It was a slug fest that saw each team record 16 hits and each team had a defensive miscue which cost them some runs.  Freshman Left-hander Steve Crew (Roseville) got his first collegiate start and left the game with the Beavers ahead 7-5 but he got a no-decision as Modesto came back to tie the game off of the eventual winner, Tye Davis (Marysville).  Andrew LeDuc (Casa Roble) struck out the side in the 9th to earn the save for the Beavers.  On Tuesday ARC recorded 19 hits and every starter had at least one hit.  Today every Modesto starter had at least one hit and every Beaver starter except Mike McKinney (Del Oro) recorded a hit, though McKinney did have an RBI.  The Beavers have two more non-conference tune-ups against BIG 8 Conference foes before starting conference play on March 8.  Saturday the Beavers will take on Sierra College at 1:00 p.m. at Beaver Field and on Tuesday the 4th they will travel to Cosumnes River College for a 2:30 p.m. start.

CAMILLUCCI, DEWEESE, GUNDOLFF, SIGN IN EARLY PERIOD

American River College is pleased to announce that three members of the 2007 baseball team have signed letters of intent to play at four year schools.

Steve Camillucci, a shortstop from Del Oro High School has signed to play at Division II powerhouse Abilene Christian University where he will join former Beaver teammate Preston Vancil in 2009. Abilene is a perennial post-season team as a member of the Lone-Star Conference where the Wildcats set a school record last season in victories with 47. Current A.R.C. coach Johnny Zepeda (04) also played at ACU.

“I am really proud of Steve and I think it will be a great fit for him there at Abilene. He is a true shortstop who has really come along offensively this fall’, says Coach Jumelet.

Glenn DeWeese a left-handed pitcher from Bishop Manogue High School in Reno who should anchor the Beavers rotation this season, has signed a National Letter of Intent with UNLV where he will join former teammates Ryan Thornton and Steve Rinaudo. DeWeese was the opening day starter for the Beavers last year but broke his thumb by getting hit by a line drive in his second start of the season at Canada College in February. Coach Jumelet says, “Glenn will prove t be one of the top left-handed pitchers in Northern California this year. His command of the strike zone with all of his pitches is as good if not better than anybody that we have had since I have been here. He definitely has a bright future ahead of him.”

RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge) has signed with Wright State University, one of the top up and coming programs in the country. The Raiders have won the Horizon League title the last two seasons under Head Coach Rob Cooper, a Sacramento native who played at El Camino High School and this past summer was an assistant coach for Team USA.

“RJ could play at any school in the country and the fact that he chose Wright State says a lot about Coach Cooper and his program”, says Coach Jumelet. Gundolff finished last season with 26 stolen bases and is 2nd on the single season stolen base leader board at A.R.C.

PARRA NAMED BREWERS MINOR PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Former American River College standout Manny Parra (02) was named the Milwaukee Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Year the organization announced. There is an article in the Oct. 22 edition of Baseball America Magazine which tells the story. Manny is the 3rd former Beaver to win an organization’s pitcher of the year award in the last 10 years as Rob Luce (96) won it in 1998 for the Seattle Mariners, and Dallas Braden (03) was the Oakland Athletics pitcher of the year in 2006.

Parra, a graduate of Casa Roble High School, threw a perfect game in his 2nd start at AAA Nashville this year before being called up in July to become the 3rd former Beaver to make his big league debut in the past two years. Manny finished the season in Milwaukee with a record of 0-1 with an ERA of 3.76 in 26 innings. In the minor leagues between AA Memphis and AAA Nashville Manny was 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA. He made 17 starts, throwing 106 innings, striking out 106 while walking only 33.

American River College sophomores Ian Cook (Ponderosa), Glenn DeWeese (Manogue, Reno), RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge), and Mike McKinney (Del Oro) were named to the 2007 Northern California Junior College All-Star Game which will take place Sunday October 6, at Sacramento State University. Ian Cook was a 1st team All-Big 7 Conference selection in 2007 after hitting .362 in conference play and finishing the seson 2nd on the team in doubles with 9 and RBI with 29.

American River College 1B/3B Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to attend Southern University on Baton Rouge, Louisiana next fall. Savage becomes the 6th player off of the 2007 team to earn a Division 1 scholarship for next season. “I am very happy for Anthony. He is a special person who we will miss very much next year. He has a great family and it was always difficult to be in a bad mood when he was around. Of course he is a very good ballplayer, too. It is nice that he will be going down there with someone that he knows (Mike Olivar from Cosumnes River College) and I think the experience of living in the South will be a great one for him. He earned every opportunity that he got here and I couldn’t be more proud than I am for him”, says head coach Doug Jumelet.

Manny is a 2000 graduate of Casa Roble High School.

It will be a lot of fun to see him pitch on TV”, says A.R.C. Head Coach Doug Jumelet.

BEAVERS SHUT OUT AT SAC CITY

The American River College bats went on Spring Break a little early as they were shut out at cross-town rival Sac City College 6-0 on Tuesday. It was the first time the Beavers had been shut out since May 4th of last season at Santa Rosa. The Beavers had several opportunities to score as they had the leadoff hitter on in 6 of the 9 innings. The Beavers threatened in the 2nd inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs but were not able to cash them in. They had runners at 1st and 2nd with one out in the 4th inning but a double play ended that threat. In the 5th CF Ryan Thornton (Capital Christian) led off with a hustle double to left but with one out LF Mike McKinney (Del Oro) hit a short fly ball to center and Thornton was out at the plate trying to score.

Jose Ramirez (El Camino) got the loss for the Beavers despite pitching very well until the 5th when with one out he walked two batters then allowed a run scoring single. After a fly out the Panthers got four straight hits, including a two run triple by Curtis Raulinaitis off of reliever Robert Butler (Casa Roble) to break it open.

The Beavers travel to Butte College for a non-league match-up tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. home game on Thursday versus Delta College. RHP Braden Bates (Union Mine) will get his first career start tomorrow.

BEAVERS DROP CLOSE ONE TO CRC

American River College dropped a close 3-1 decision to the first place Cosumnes River College Hawks at Beaver Field on Saturday. Cosumnes got on the board in the first inning scoring twice off of starter Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) when CRC catcher Joey Pilatti doubled to right center with 2 outs. The Beavers answered back in the first after RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge) walked and LF Mike McKinney (Del Oro) singled to right moving Gundolff to third. Steve Rinaudo then flew out to right which was deep enough to score Gundolff.

The score would remain 2-1 until the 9th despite the Beavers loading the bases with 2 outs in the 7th and having a runner at 3rd with 1 out in the 8th. In the 9th the Hawks would add an insurance run on a 2 out single by the SS Mike Olivar. The Beavers RF Matt Miraldi (Bear River) led off the 9th with a single but SS Steve Camillucci hit into a double play which ended the Beavers hopes of a comeback. Ryan Thornton (Capital Christian) made his return from a hand injury by going 3x4 with a double on the day.

BEAVERS, RAMIREZ GET THE WIN

LHP Jose Ramirez (El Camino) picked up his long awaited first win of the season as the Beavers downed Diablo Valley College 9-4 at Beaver Field on Tuesday. Ramirez had been the Beavers hard-luck guy all year, including picking up the loss at Sierra in relief on Friday, allowing the go-ahead runs on two errors. He was effective, going six innings while allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out five. Denny Wibbenhorst (Bear River) worked the last three innings to pick up his first save of the year.

The Beavers were trailing 2-1 entering the 4th inning when they exploded for 6 runs thanks to a 2-run double by LF Mike McKinney (Del Oro) who was 4x5 on the day with 4 RBI. CF Mark Leacox (El Camino), C Chris Kidd (Mesa Verde) and 2B RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge) picked up two out hits for the Beavers to drive in runs in the 4th. BEAVERS COME CLOSE AGAIN BUT LOSE 9-7

It was once again close but no cigar for the Beavers as they lost for the 3rd time in 4 games, this time to Sierra College 9-7. In each of those three losses A.R.C. has had the tying run at 2nd base in the 9th inning. In Friday’s game the Beavers took a 3-1 lead off of Sierra ace David Dinelli by scoring three times in the 2nd inning. After a leadoff walk by C Chris Kidd (Mesa Verde) RF Matt Miraldi (Bear River) tripled down the left field line. Miraldi then scored on a Steve Camillucci (Del Oro) single and Camillucci later scored on an RJ Gundolff single to left. Gundolff was 4x5 on the day. Sierra would come back and take the lead on a 2 run homer by DH Ryan Stevens, but the Beavers came right back with a solo HR off of Dinelli by LF Clayton Benton (Mesa Verde), his first homer of the year.

Defensively the Beavers committed 2 errors on the day but they both contributed to big innings by Sierra, and both with LHP Jose Ramirez (El Camino) on the mound. The Beavers would get close in the 8th with a 2 run single by Steve Camillucci and an RBI infield single by RJ Gundolff. In the 9th Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) led off with a single to right center and after a Clayton Benton fly out 1B Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) singled to left. This was Savage’s third hit of the day with the other two being doubles. Pinch hitter Ian Cook (Ponderosa) came up and after a wild pitch put runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, he lined out sharply to right but no runners were able to advance. Matt Miraldi then flew out on the first pitch to end the game.

The Beavers drop to 4-5 in the Big 7 and will be home all next week, facing Diablo Valley College on Tuesday and Santa Rosa Junior College on Thursday with both games starting at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday the Beavers will take on the first place Cosumnes River College Hawks at Beaver Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.

BEAVERS LOSE CLOSE ONE TO SAC CITY

The Beavers had their chances at home on Saturday versus cross-town rival Sac City College but came up short, dropping a 5-3 decision which puts the Beavers at 11-11 on the year and 3-4 in the Big 7 Conference. The Panthers got on the board early with a leadoff single and a walk which was followed by a 2 run double by SCC C Ben Petralli to right center off of starter Jose Ramirez (El Camino). The Beavers answered back in the bottom half of the first when 2B RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge) singled and stole 2nd. LF Mike McKinney (Del Oro) walked and both moved up on a Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) groundout. After a wild pitch scored Gundolff DH Ian Cook (Ponderosa) could not bring home McKinney as he struck out and 1B Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) grounded out to end the inning. The score would remain the same until the 4th when Sac City got on the board again thanks to a leadoff walk and a one out triple to right center by SCC 2B Kyle Prewitt. Prewitt would later score on an infield single to make the score 4-1. The Panthers got another run in the 5th after two more walks and a single by LF Curtis Raulinaitis to make the score 5-1. The Beavers would have several more chances but twice could not cash in with a runner at 3rd and one out.

Finally in the 9th the Beavers offense got going with a leadoff walk by 3B Nate Campbell (Roseville) and a single down the left field line by CF Mark Leacox (El Camino). After RJ Gundolff struck out for just the 3rd time all season Mike McKinney singled up the middle to score Campbell which was followed by a Steve Rinaudo single to left to score Leacox. A Steve Camillucci (Del Oro) groundout moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd with two outs when Anthony Savage lined out to right where the Panthers RF Chris Elder made a shoestring catch to end the game. The Beavers will play Delta College at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton on Tuesday followed by a home makeup game against Feather River College at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. That game is a non-conference game.

BEAVERS DROP ONE TO CRC

American River College missed out on an opportunity to tie for first place by dropping a 5-1 decision to Cosumnes River College on Thursday. The Beavers were ahead 1-0 entering the 7th inning when the Hawks scored 5 times after a pair of singles and a 1 out botched double play ball set the table for CRC DH Alan Hudson to single in 2 runs which was followed shortly thereafter by a 3 run triple by CRC RF Scott Heinig. Robert Butler (Casa Roble) was charged with the runs and the loss, though only one run was earned. The Beavers managed just 6 hits, led by DH Ian Cook’s (Ponderosa) 2x4 performance. The #8 ranked Beavers dropped to 11-10 and 3-3 in the Big 7 Conference.

RINAUDO THROWS CG AT SANTA ROSA

Sophomore right-hander Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) threw the Beavers first complete game of the season in defeating Santa Rosa Junior College 7-4 at Santa Rosa on Tuesday. The win improves the Beavers record to 11-9 on the year and 3-2 in the Big 7 Conference. A.R.C. is just one game out of first and they play the first place Cosumnes River College Hawks at CRC on Thursday at 1:30.

In addition to scattering 9 hits and striking out five, Rinaudo was also 3x3 at the plate with 2 walks and scored three runs. He was driven in twice by 1B Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) who had 3 RBI on the day. Also having a big day was 3B Nate Campbell (Roseville) who was 4x5 with a double. Campbell was playing third because Rinaudo was pitching and he helped start two of the three double plays that A.R.C. turned on the day.

The Beavers were ahead 5-4 heading into the top of the 9th when Nate Campbell doubled off the left field fence with one out. Rinaudo then walked putting runners at 1st and 2nd. CF Mark Leacox (El Camino) then came up, as he had entered the game in the 8th as a defensive replacement, and after a wild pitch moved the runners up to 2nd and 3rd, he sent a line drive base hit past a drawn in infield to left to score Campbell and Rinaudo giving the Beavers a three run cushion. Rinaudo closed out the 9th on eight pitches to earn his first conference victory of the season.

BEAVERS GIVE ONE AWAY AT DVC

American River College continued to struggle offensively which cost them a 5-4 decision at Diablo Valley College on Friday. BEAVERS BATS BAFFLED AT HOME

American River College managed only 3 hits at home in a 6-4 loss to Sierra College on Thursday. The loss drops the Beavers record to 10-8, 2-1 in the Big 7 Conference and improves Sierra’s record to 16-3, 2-2 in the Big 7. This is the Beavers 5th straight loss to Sierra dating back to last year.

Sierra opened the scoring in the 1st off of starter Robert Butler (Casa Roble) when leadoff hitter Dustin Leroy chopped an infield single which was followed by a Kyle Richardson triple to right center. Two batters latter Sierra DH Andy Launier grounded out to 2nd to score Richardson to put Sierra up 2-0. The Wolverines would add 4 more in the 5th when Sierra’s LF Eric Deragisch hit a bases loaded sac fly to make the score 3-0. After a wild pitch moved runners to 2nd and 3rd Sierra’s 1B Ryan Stephens hit a chopper to the drawn in R.J. Gundolff (Oak Ridge) at second base. Gundolff briefly bobbled the hit then through home but the throw got away from A.R.C.’s catcher Chris Kidd (Mesa Verde) which allowed two runs to score. Sierra C Ryan Allen then doubled to left scoring Stephens and chasing Butler from the game. Reliever Justin Hughes (Cordova) came on to throw 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

A.R.C. got on the board in the 6th after Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) walked and stole 2nd, which was followed later by a Chris Kidd single to right which was the Beavers first hit of the game. RAMIREZ STRIKES OUT 12 IN BEAVERS COMEBACK WIN

American River College starter Jose Ramirez (El Camino) struck out 12 Delta College batters while allowing only 2 hits but still wound up with a no-decision in the Beavers 4-3 come from behind win at Beaver Field on Saturday. Ramirez, who is headed to Sac State next year on scholarship gave up a 4th inning solo HR and an 8th inning double down the right field line which scored two runners after a dropped fly ball in left field prolonged the inning. Reliever Preston Vancil (West Campus) retired the final four batters, two by strikeout, to earn his first win of the season.

The Beavers struck first in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single by 2B RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge), he took 2nd on a passed ball, then stole 3rd. 3B Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) grounded out to 3rd which was good enough to score Gundolff. The Beavers threatened several times but could not score off of Delta starter Sam Miller. Finally in the 8th inning SS Steve Camillucci (Del Oro) reached on an error by Delta’s second baseman. Pinch hitter Clayton Benton (Mesa Verde) also reached on an error by the 2B which put runners at 1st and 2nd. After a wild pitch and with Ryan Thornton (Capital Christian) running for Benton, RJ Gundolff singled through the left side to score Camillucci to make the game 3-2. Steve Rinaudo then singled to center to score Thornton and tie the game at three. That was Rinaudo’s team leading 19th RBI of the season. After a double steal put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out (the steal gave Gundolff a team leading 13 stolen bases in 14 tries) DH Ian Cook (Ponderosa) hit a slow chopper to short in which Delta College threw out Gundolff at the plate leaving the score tied at three with two out. 1B Anthony Savage then came through with a clutch single to left center which scored Rinaudo to put A.R.C. up for good.

BEAVERS BATS BLOWN AWAY AT YUBA

Just two days after scoring 20 runs on 19 hits the Beavers managed only 2 hits, one a bunt single by Matt Miraldi (Bear River), and three runs against the host Yuba College 49ers. The game was played with 15-20 mph winds blowing straight in, but it did not stop Yuba from compiling 11 hits and 7 runs, which were aided by 4 A.R.C. errors. Each infield position had an error for the Beavers. The most costly came in the 5th inning with A.R.C. ahead 3-0, with runners on first and second, the Yuba College 3B Nick Gauldin singled to center. Mark Leacox (El Camino) threw home but the runners were not going because the outfielders were positioned shallow because of the wind. Leacox’s throw skipped away from 1B Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) and into the dugout to score two runs. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three. Steve Rinaudo came in to pitch in the 7th and gave up 4 runs, three earned which gave him his first loss of the season. The Beavers return home Wednesday to face the Butte College Roadrunners at 2:00 p.m. They are now 6-5 on the season with Big 7 Conference play to begin next week.

BEAVERS TAKE 3 OUT OF 4 DURING WEEK

American River College won 3 of the 4 games they played this week to improve to 6-4 on the season. The Beavers defeated Yuba College 13-5 on Wednesday with Case Eaton (El Camino) earning his first win of the season. Thursday the Beavers downed former Camino Norte Conference rival Merced College 10-6 with RHP Justin Hughes (Cordova) picking up his first collegiate win throwing five solid innings of relief. Cook also drove in 4 runs on the day.

Friday was not so good for the Beavers as the visiting College of Sequoias Giants blasted the A.R.C. 14-5 thanks to 6 A.R.C. errors and 7 walks by the pitching staff. The Beavers Matt Miraldi (Bear River) had a double and scored twice and R.J. Gundolff had two hits for the Beavers.

Saturday turned into a 4 hour marathon which saw the Beavers score 20 runs in a game for the first time since they tied the school record of 25 back in 2001. The team handed visiting San Jose City College their 3rd loss against 9 wins on the season. This was A.R.C.’s first win over San Jose City in at least 20 years as records only go back to 1985. Since 1985 the Beavers are now 1-5-1 against the Jaguars. Sophomore Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) picked up his first win of the season by throwing 5 innings allowing just 4 hits. The Beavers used an 11 run 4th inning to take the lead for good which was not over until the end as San Jose scored 3 times in the 9th to make the final score 20-14. The 4th inning was capped off by Ryan Thornton’s (Capital Christian) 1st career grand slam, which is his 2nd HR of the year and the Beavers first at home in 2007. Three Beavers had 3 hits each, with Mike McKinney (Del Oro) going 3x6 with a 2B and 2 RBI, Steve Rinaudo was 3x7 with a 2B and a 2 run triple – his 7 at bats in the game tie a school record – and R.J. Gundolff continued his hot hitting with a 3x4 day and 3 RBI. Seven Beavers had a multiple hit game on Saturday.

Also of note during the week was Head Coach Doug Jumelet moving into 3rd place on the schools all time win list passing Grant Donnelly, the schools first head coach who led the Beavers to four straight Golden Valley League championships from 1959-1962. Coach Donnelly had a career record of 67-27. Coach Jumelet improved to 69-60 overall.

The Beavers will travel to Yuba College to face the 49ers in Marysville at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, then return home on Wednesday to face 4-5 Butte College at 2:00 p.m. at Beaver Field. The Beavers will then face the 7-2 West Valley Vikings at home for a 3 game series beginning Friday at @ 2:00 p.m. and finishing up with a double header on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

BEAVERS GET SOAKED BY LASSEN

In a game that got pretty wet late, it was also very ugly early as the Beavers made 4 errors in the 2nd inning which helped propel Lassen College to a 12-4 win over the Beavers in their 2007 home opener. A.R.C. starter Denny Wibbenhorst (Bear River) got out of a jam in the 1st inning after a one out hit batter, walk and a single. He could not get out of the 2nd inning jam which included errors by the 2nd baseman, shortstop, third baseman, and the right fielder to put Lassen up 4-0. After Lassen got another run in the 3rd they got four more off Wibbenhorst with a leadoff walk followed by 3 straight hits to put Lassen up 8-0. BEAVERS BLANK COLTS 6-0

American River College won its 3rd straight game on the road to finish off a 5 game road trip to open the season with a 6-0 win over the host Canada Colts on Wednesday. It was the Beavers first shutout since the Beavers defeated West Valley 17-0 at Beaver Field last February 25th. The Beavers got on top early with the help of some shaky defense by Canada. CF Ryan Thornton (Capital Christian) led off the game by reaching on an error by the Canada shortstop, then stole 2nd and scored on a Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) double off of the fence in left. Rinaudo would later score on a two out single to center by DH Clayton Benton (Mesa Verde) to put the Beavers up 2-0. LHP Glenn DeWeese (Manogue, Reno) retired the first five batters he faced but then took a line drive off of his throwing hand which knocked him from the game. The Beavers brought in RHP Robby Butler (Casa Roble) who held the shutout through the 5th. After two scoreless innings by Jose Ramirez (El Camino), A.R.C. got a scoreless inning each from Steve Rinaudo and Preston Vancil (West Campus). Rinaudo and Vancil each struck out two batters in their inning of work.

The Beavers put the game away in the 8th with an RBI single by SS RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge) who plated RF Matt Miraldi (Bear River) with a single past a drawn in infield. BEAVERS TAKE 2 OUT OF 3 FROM MODESTO

The American River College baseball team evened up its season record at 2-2 by sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday at Bo Aiello Field in Modesto. After falling one hit short of tying the game on Friday, the Beavers used the big inning to steal two wins on the road from last years Central Valley Conference champions. The Beavers lost the first game 5-3 despite a strong outing from starter Jose Ramirez who struck out 7 in 5 innings of work. The Beavers were trailing 5-1 entering the 9th inning when 1st baseman Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) was hit by a pitch with 1 out. That was followed by a Chris Kidd (Mesa Verde) walk and an Ian Cook (Ponderosa) single to load the bases. Freshman LF Mike Vanderpool (Cordova) then flew out to left. Freshman SS RJ Gundolff (Oak Ridge) singled on his first pitch to put the score at 5-3 Modesto. CF Ryan Thornton (Capital Christian) then walked to put the tying runs on base but 3B Jason Lomascola (Bella Vista) flew out to center field to end the game.

Saturday started out with a bang for the Beavers as they scored 3 times in the first inning off of hard throwing Brody Downs for Modesto. Ian Cook drove in two runs with a single up the middle and then scored on Anthony Savages triple. Sophomore Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) did not allow a hit for the first four innings but the Pirates got a run in the 5th off of an error by CF Ryan Thornton. The Pirates took the lead in the 6th inning when Rinaudo walked the leadoff hitter, got MJC 3B Joey Norwood to ground out to short, but then walked the next batter then hit the following batter. Freshman 2B Blake Trinkler then hit Rinaudo’s 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam to put Modesto up 5-3. That would remain the score until the 9th when Modesto brought in Norwood to close out the game. Freshman RF Matt Miraldi (Bear River) led off the 9th with his first hit of the season which was followed by an Anthony Savage hit by pitch. After a failed bunt attempt by Tim Fitzgerald (Jesuit), the Beavers would record four straight extra base hits. Pinch hitter Clayton Benton (Mesa Verde) doubled home the tying runs, followed by an RJ Gundolff double off the fence in left. Ryan Thornton then added a double of his own off the left field fence which was backed up by a Mike McKinney (Del Oro) triple to right which scored Thornton. Sophomore closer Preston Vancil (West Campus) came on to pitch the 9th and secure his first career save and the first win of the season for the Beavers 8-6 over the Pirates.

The second game Saturday saw the Beavers have four 3 run innings, partly fueled by 6 Modesto errors as sophomore Robby Butler (Casa Roble) picked up his first win of the year as the Beavers won the rubber match 13-4. The Beavers used three doubles (2 by Mike McKinney), a triple, and an Anthony Savage home run to pace the attack. The Beavers 14 hit game was led by a 4x4 performance by Steve Rinaudo. He also had 3 RBI. Mike McKinney was 3x4 with 2 RBI. Robby Butler threw 5 innings to get the win and struck out 7, including 6 in the first 3 innings.

BEAVERS DROP 2007 OPENER TO SOLANO

American River College opened the 2007 by squandering a pair of 5 run leads and dropping the season opener to Solano 9-8. The Beavers were cruising along behind the pitching of left-hander Glenn DeWeese (Manogue, Reno) with a 6-1 lead when an error and some timely hits for the Falcons (3-0) helped tie the game at 6 apiece in the 6th inning. The Beavers jumped out early, scoring 2 runs in the first on a double by 2B Nate Campbell (Roseville) a couple of Solano errors, and an RBI single by 1B Steve Camillucci (Del Oro). A.R.C. got 3 more in the 3rd with a leadoff hustle double by RF Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble), an RBI double by 3B Jason Lomascola, then a 2 out home run to left field by LF Mike Vanderpool (Cordova). After Solano got one in the 5th, the Beavers got it back in the 6th inning when Vanderpool reached on an error, was advanced to 3rd by an errant pickoff throw, and scored on SS RJ Gundolff’s groundout to short. The Falcons chased DeWeese in the 6th inning by scoring 5 times, with the big blow a 2 run home run on the first pitch thrown by reliever Denny Wibbenhorst (Bear River) by Solano’s LF Ruben Perez.

The teams traded runs in the 7th inning but then the Falcons took the lead in the 8th on a 2 out throwing error by Jason Lomascola. This and a double steal of home allowed Solano to take a 9-7 lead.

The Beavers threatened in the 9th with a leadoff single by CF Ryan Thornton (Capital Christian) and a single by Nate Campbell who took 2nd on the throw to third. Steve Rinaudo then hit the first pitch right at the 3rd baseman for the first out, then C Ian Cook (Ponderosa) grounded out to short to drive in Thornton. Jason Lomascola ended the game with a groundout to short.

Sophomore Preston Vancil (West Campus) took the loss, allowing 2 unearned runs in the 8th inning. The Beavers start the season 0-1 for the 2nd straight season then travel to Modesto for a 3 game series with the 1-2 Pirates.

TWO BEAVERS SIGN FOR 2007 SEASON

Two members of the 2006 American River College baseball team have signed scholarships which will see them play at four-year schools for the 2007 season. RHP Curtis Wills (Prospect H.S., San Jose) signed with Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee. Wills was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA on the season and threw 9 innings versus Lassen College but wound up with a no decision in a game in which the Beavers won 3-2.

RHP Jason Ornellas (Archbishop Riordan H.S., San Francisco) signed with the University of Indianapolis and will begin pitching for the Greyhounds this Spring despite having another year of eligibility at A.R.C. The University of Indianapolis was 35-24 in 2006 and is expecting Ornellas to come in a be a starter. Jason is the third freshman that fourth year head coach Doug Jumelet has sent on to a four year school with eligibility at A.R.C. remaining. Ornellas joins David Ferazza (04) who went on to the University of Alabama and Mike Willeford (06) who went on to play at San Diego State.

"I am exited that these two guys will be moving on and continuing to pitch. Curtis has fought through a lot to get to this point so I am extremely happy for him. With Jason leaving it is a blow to the depth of our staff for this season but like I have always said, it is my goal to help our student-athletes get their education paid for through baseball. If guys do the right things in the classroom and on the field they will give themselves these types of opportunities and I support them 100%. To have 3 guys in four years be able to transfer at the break is a testament to our focus on the education part and I owe a great deal of thanks to our athletic-academic counselor Mike Sachau. He really does a great job making sure that these kids will have the opportunity to move on", says head coach Doug Jumelet.

Beavers RHP/Utility man Steve Rinaudo had several D-1 offers but decided to wait until the Spring to make a decision. Among the schools who made offers to Steve were UNLV, #12 Oral Roberts, San Jose State, and Sacramento State. Steve was a 29th round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals last season.

KEVIN WATSON SIGNS WITH BETHANY COLLEGE

Former American River College and Foothill High graduate has signed a National Letter of Intent with Bethany College, an NAIA school in Lindsborg Kansas. Kevin pitched sparingly for the Beavers in 2006 but was regarded as one of the best control pitchers on the staff. "Red" as he was known to his teammates was also one of the most energetic and enthusiastic players on the squad. "If everyone on the team could have as great a love for the game as Kevin does, it would be a remarkable bunch. He battled through tremendous adversity just to be out on the field and when those type of guys have success and move on, that is when you realize as a coach that guys like him are the reason you do this job", says Coach Jumelet. "We couldn’t be happier for him that he is getting a chance to get his education paid for and to finish his career as a collegiate baseball player. He deserves and has earned this opportunity."

BEAVERS END SEASON OF CLOSE CALLS

The 2006 American River College baseball season ended fittingly with the Beavers suffering another one run defeat, their 9th of the season 10-9 to rival Sac City College on Saturday at Sac City’s Union Stadium. The Beavers got off to a strong start in 2006 by winning four of their first five games, including a two game road sweep of Central Valley Conference champion Modesto Junior College. In the March 1, 2006 Northern California poll A.R.C. was tied for 4th with Porterville College and even received a first place vote after taking 2 out of 3 from eventual #1 seed West Valley College. The Big 7 Conference proved to be every bit as tough as was predicted, and after a 2-1 start to the conference, including a 3-2 home win over Sac City, the Beavers lost 9 straight to fall to the bottom of the conference standings. On the season the Beavers lost 26 games, 9 by 1 run, 5 by 2 runs, and 6 by 3 runs for a total of 20 losses by 3 or less runs. They lost 6 games with 2 outs in the final inning with the lead. The Beavers were competitive in nearly every game and despite finishing 10 games under .500, they gave up only 8 runs more than they scored on the year. The all-conference teams will be announced on Thursday while the All-America and All-Northern California teams will be announced at the Final Four in Fresno over Memorial Day weekend. This is only the 5th time in the past 20 years that A.R.C. has missed the playoffs.

The decision whether to hold the batting practice and game will be made Saturday morning and there will be a message left on the baseball office phone Saturday morning. The office phone number is (916) 484-8294.

S. RINAUDO, BIESANZ, L. LOMASCOLA, NESHEM WIN STRONGMAN COMPETITION

The Beavers held their first ever strong man competition this year out at Beaver field. The 2006 competition was kicked off with the hills event. The hills event consisted of a player pulling a tire attached to a rope up the hill of Beaver football stadium. Ryan Thornton established the speed record of 5.59 seconds in the event. Team 3 of Andrew LeDuc, Thornton, Wade Majewski, and Andy Harris took the early lead after the event was finished, establishing a total of 26.27 seconds as a team up the hill. The second event was the medicine ball toss. Andy Biesanz put out a strong showing by tossing the ball 41 feet, just beating out teammate Steve Rinaudo’s toss of 39’ 8". After 2 events we had a tie on the leader board between team 3 and team 4 of S. Rinaudo, Biesanz, Larry Lomascola, and Chris Neshem. Event three was the closest event of the competiton. Team 4 beat out Team 2 by .01 of a second in the sandbag relay. Team 2’s earlier time of 41.69 did not hold up to that of team 4’s 41.68. By the end of three events and moving into the final event team 4 had taken the advantage with 11 points. Team 3 was a close second with 9 points. The obstacle course was all that was left in the competition. Thornton’s time of 23.97 anchored team 3’s first place finish in the event, but was not quite enough to edge out team 4’s overall performance. Team 3 finished with a total time of 104.54 seconds. Team 4’s time of 106.66 seconds was good enough to grab second in the event and win the competition outright. The final standings were:

1st Place -- Team 4 - Steve Rinaudo, Andy Biesanz, Larry Lomascola, and Chris Neshem with 14 points.

2nd Place --
Team 3 - Andrew LeDuc, Ryan Thornton, Wade Majewski, and Andy Harris with 13 points.

3rd Place -- Team 2 - Joe Finn, Jason Lomascola, Jon Mauerer, and Nate Campbell with 7 points.

4th Place -- Team 1 of Anthony Savage, Bryon McDonough, Garret Mayo, and Chris Kidd with 6 points.

McDONOUGH TURNS DOWN OFFERS, STAYS A BEAVER

Just days after learning that the Beavers were losing SS Mike Willeford (Cordova) to San Diego State, the Beaver baseball team got some good news when they learned that sophomore 2B/LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) would stay for his sophomore year. McDonough started the 2005 season as the Beavers opening day 2B and #3 hitter, but a wrist injury limited his effectiveness at the plate. After Chris Rinaudo emerged as the best hitter in Northern California, McDonough regained his health and helped the Beavers to a 29-12 record and the 3rd best hitting team in the state. McDonough split time between LF, DH, and 2B the rest of the season finishing with a batting average of .287 with 12 RBI and 7 stolen bases in 108 at bats. Among his 2005 highlights were a pinch hit 9th inning double versus eventual state champion Santa Rosa Junior College in which he scored the run that sent the game into extra innings. He was also 4x5 with an RBI and a stolen base at Chabot and had a 9th inning, game tying, RBI single in the Beavers 5-4 comeback win at Sacramento City College. Bryon turned down offers from Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida and King College in Bristol, Tennessee.

BEAVERS TABBED 7th IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
PRE-SEASON POLL

American River College was picked 7th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper pre-season poll which was announced just before Christmas. The Beavers finished 29-12 last season in Doug Jumelet’s 2nd season as head coach. Their ratings percentage index (RPI) put them at 5th in Northern California after the regular season and the Beavers earned a #8 seed for the playoffs. They made it to the 2nd round of playoffs for the first time since 2000. "Pre-season ratings are nice because they are usually a sign of what you did last season. I really don’t feel that it has any bearing on this year, but it is nice to be recognized", says Coach Jumelet. Last year the Beavers were ranked 18th entering the year but quickly moved up after going 8-2 in the pre-season.

This year’s schedule is loaded with teams in the rankings, as the Beavers will play five teams that are in the top 10 and 10 of the top 18 for a total of 26 games against teams in the top 18. Big 7 Conference rival Cosumnes River College was tabbed the #1 preseason team in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

WILLEFORD BECOMES AN AZTEC

American River College head baseball coach Doug Jumelet has announced that sophomore shortstop Mike Willeford has signed a letter of intent and will play for Tony Gwynn and the San Diego State Aztecs this spring. Willeford, who was an honorable mention all-league third baseman in 2005 will be going to San Diego State to play second base. He is the 2nd player in Coach Jumelet’s three years to transfer at the break to a major Division 1 program. In 2004 drafted catcher David Ferazza signed a scholarship with the University of Alabama to transfer mid-year to play for the Crimson Tide.

"Obviously losing a player of Mike’s caliber and character hurts our team in the short-term, but it gives a young guy like Steve Rinaudo (Casa Roble) or Anthony Savage (Laguna Creek) a chance to play and shine. One of our main goals is to win the Big 7 championship, but my ultimate goal is to have these guys get their education paid for through baseball, and this is the perfect opportunity for Mike", says coach Jumelet.

San Diego State is where Willeford wanted to go out of Cordova High School, but he came to American River College and made an immediate impact on and off the field. Known as the class clown of the team, Willeford could always be seen and heard having fun on the field while maintaining a 3.8 g.p.a., including a perfect 4.0 this fall.

"Mike has been a dream player and a student-athlete in the truest sense of the word. He is what is good about collegiate athletics. We wish him well at San Diego State and we are extremely proud that he has taken care of business on the field and in the classroom in order to have this opportunity".

Mike is the first Beaver to transfer to San Diego State in the Tony Gwynn era and the first to transfer there since Brian Rick in 1998.

HALL SIGNS NEW DEAL AND ANDRADE GOES TO THE PADRES

Former American River College catcher Toby Hall (96) signed a one year $2.25 million deal with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Hall, who has been the D-Rays starting catcher for the past 3 years is a career .266 hitter with 36 career home runs. He has consistently been in the D-Rays top 5 in most offensive categories for the past 3 years. His contract also includes up to $225,000 in incentives.

Also, former Beaver Steve Andrade (99) has signed with the San Diego Padres as a rule 5 draftee, meaning the Padres must keep him in the big leagues all season or they must offer him back to the Devil Rays for $50,000 in cash. Andrade has dominated at every level of minor league ball, putting up unbelievable statistics with the Angels and Toronto Blue Jays minor league affiliates.

DALLAS BRADEN NAMED A’S PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Former American River College standout Dallas Braden (2003) was named the Oakland Athletics organization Pitcher of the Year for 2005.

Braden, who graduated from Stagg High School in Stockton, was drafted by the A’s in the 24th round out of Texas Tech University in 2004.  He split the 2005 season between his hometown Stockton Ports, where he was 6-0 with a 2.68 ERA, and AA Midland, TX, where he was 9-5 with a 3.90 ERA for the Texas League champion Rockhounds.

Braden, fifth on the Beavers’ career strikeout list with 148 in two seasons, was part of the record setting pitching staff at ARC in 2002 that included National Player of the Year Manny Parra (Casa Roble), lefthander Ryan Knippschild (Cordova), who set a school save record, 10 game-winner Ryan Vaughn (Rio Americano), and current ARC pitching coach Andy Willick (Roseville).  That pitching staff was second in the state in team ERA and holds the school record for team ERA and saves.

JAKE HOWER SIGNS WITH FRESNO STATE

Sophomore closer Jake Hower (Eaglecrest, CO) signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday with Fresno State University, head coach Doug Jumelet announced. Hower, a 6’3" right hander who was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 43rd round is the first Beaver to sign during the early signing period since Eric Mattison (Granite Bay) signed with Oral Roberts University in 2003 for the 2004 season. Jake is the first American River College player to sign with the Bulldogs since James Borges (Highlands H.S.) did in 1993. Jake was also offered scholarships by U.N.L.V. and Armstrong Atlantic University in Georgia.

Sophomore 3B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) also went on a recruiting trip to Fresno State but will not decide on a school until the spring.

MID SUMMER REPORT

4 BEAVERS EXCELLING AT DOUBLE A LEVEL

Four former American River College pitchers are enjoying solid summers at the AA level this summer. RHP Steve Andrade (99 / Woodland) is currently 1-2 with a 2.95 ERA for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Andrade has thrown 21 1/3 innings allowing only 9 hits and 9 walks to go with 26 strikeouts.

LHP Manny Parra (02 / Casa Roble) is 5-6 with a 3.96 ERA for the Huntsville Stars, the AA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Manny has thrown 91 innings with 86 strikeouts and only 21 walks. Manny was the 2002 National Junior College Player of the Year as named by Baseball America.

LHP Ryan Knippschild (02 / Cordova) was recently promoted to AA Akron of the Eastern League which is the Cleveland Indians affiliate. Ryan, who played at the University of Kansas after leaving A.R.C. has thrown 6 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5.

LHP Dallas Braden (03 / Stagg H.S., Stockton) is perhaps the biggest surprise. After being a 25th round pick of the Oakland A’s out of Texas Tech University, Dallas has climbed through the system moving from A Stockton to AA Midland in just one year. Dallas is a combined 12-3 on the year after going 6-0 with a 2.68 ERA at Modesto, and is 6-3 at AA Midland with a 3.12 ERA. His combined totals are a staggering 113 strikeouts in 110 innings, while allowing just 89 hits and 34 walks. Through mid-June, at the time of his promotion to AA Dallas was leading the entire minor leagues in wins and strikeouts.

C/3B Steve Holm (99 / McClatchy H.S.) was hitting .216 with 5 home runs and 17 RBI for the Augusta Greenjackets, the single A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. After finishing at A.R.C. Steve transferred to Oral Roberts University in Tulsa Oklahoma where he was a 3rd team All-American his junior year after finishing 7th in the NCAA Division I in batting average.

Former Head Coach Kevin Higgins is currently the hitting coach for the Burlington Indians, the Cleveland organizations short season A affiliate in the Appalachian League. The team is off to a slow start with a 3-10 record.

FROM ARC TO THE IVY LEAGUE

Redshirt freshman RHP David Martin (Casa Roble) has been accepted to Cornell University, a member of the prestigious IVY LEAGUE, and will pitch for the Big Red next season. Martin had 10 starts on the year for the Beavers which was second most on the staff. His 61 2/3 innings was also 2nd most on the staff behind Jason Maes. Martin was 5-1 with a 4.96 ERA and was 4-0 in Bay Valley Conference play. David threw nine solid innings in a no decision versus state champion Santa Rosa Junior College in which he scattered five hits and struck out eight. David finished his two years at A.R.C. with a cumulative g.p.a. of 3.7. He is believed to be the first A.R.C. baseball player ever to continue on to an IVY LEAGUE school.

THENNIS, HOWER TAKEN IN MLB DRAFT

Two American River College baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday. Freshman SS Doug Thennis from Mesa Verde High School was drafted in the 26th round by the Washington Nationals. Doug is the first player from the Sacramento area to be drafted by the Washington Nationals organization, which was formerly the Montreal Expos. Thennis was selected in the 26th round which is the highest for a Beaver since Manny Parra was taken in the 26th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2001 draft.

Jake Hower, a right handed pitcher from Eagle Crest High School in Colorado was selected in the 43rd round by the Houston Astros. Jake was the closer for the Beavers this past season and was second in the state with 9 saves. His save total was one shy of the A.R.C. school record set last year by Kevin Mattox (Rio Americano). Jake is the first player from A.R.C. to be drafted by the Houston Astros.

Both Doug and Jake will be considered draft and follow (DNF) players who will return to school in the fall. Their respective organizations will hold onto their negotiating rights until one week before next years draft.

DOUG JUMELET NAMED FULL-TIME BASEBALL COACH

American River College announced on Tuesday that Doug Jumelet is officially the Head Baseball Coach of the Beavers. Jumelet played at San Juan High School, and graduated in 1990. He then played at American River College in 1993 before transferring to U.C. Riverside. He returned to A.R.C. in the Fall of 1999 and helped lead the Beavers to their first Final Four appearance in 2000. After four years as an assistant to longtime head coach Kevin Higgins, he took over the program in 2004. In 2005 the Beavers finished 29-12 and advanced to the 2nd round of the Northern California playoffs where they were seeded 6th in Northern California. The job was considered part-time for two years and was opened up to full-time status this Spring.

"I am very excited to know that this program will have the stability of knowing who the coaching staff will consist of for a long time. This is a very competitive time in this area for community college baseball and I intend to do everything possible to keep A.R.C. at the top of the list for a long time", says Jumelet. American River College will compete in the BIG 7 Conference next season which will consist of A.R.C, Cosumes River College, San Joaquin Delta College, Diablo Valley College, Sacramento City College, Santa Rosa Junior College and Sierra College.

RINAUDO AN ALL-AMERICAN, VAUGHN ALL NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

Freshman infielder Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) was named to the Junior College All-American team as an infielder on Saturday. Rinaudo led the state in batting average during the regular season hitting .453, which is 3rd on the all-time school single season records behind Terry Stark (.485 in 1980) and Pete Fondersmith (.456 in 1985). Rinaudo was the leading vote getter of all of the infielders nominated for All-American.

Sophomore utility player Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) was named to the All-Northern California team as a utility player. The big right hander led the Beavers in ERA this year, posting a 4-1 record and a 2.63 ERA while also hitting .404 with a team leading 4 home runs and 35 RBI. Vaughn’s average of .404 puts him 5th all-time on the single season batting average leaders behind Stark, Fondersmith, Rinaudo, and Jason Landreth (.406 in 1996).

ZEPEDA WINS BATTING TITLE, NAMED ALL REGION 1ST TEAM

Former American River College standout Johnny Zepeda (Rio Linda) was named 1st team all Lone-Star Conference and 1st team all South Central Region for the 2005 season. BEAVERS OUSTED IN SECOND ROUND OF PLAYOFFS

The #6 ranked American River College baseball team lost their first two games of the four team double-elimination tournament this weekend. The Beavers were defeated by the #3 ranked College of San Mateo Bulldogs 10-4 on Friday behind four home runs off of A.R.C. ace Jason Maes (Folsom). A.R.C. 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) hit his team leading 4th home run of the season.

In the second game, the Beavers lost 8-6 to the host Cosumnes River College Hawks, as CRC scored twice in the top of the 9th to defeat the Beavers and end their season. Freshman SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) was 4x4 in the game. The Beavers finished the season with a record of 29-12, their most victories since the 2002 season when they finished at 34-12 but were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. This was the Beavers first trip to the second round since the 2000 season when they went to the Final Four.

Santa Rosa Junior College defeated San Mateo twice on Sunday to win the regional and will travel to Fresno next week to take on Palomar College and Orange Coast College from Southern California and Fresno City College in the California Community College Final Four.

BEAVERS SWEEP MARIN, ADVANCE TO 2ND ROUND OF PLAYOFFS

Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) and Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) combined to record the Beavers first shutout of the season in defeating the College of Marin 4-0 to take the best two-out-of-three series two games to none. In addition to scattering just four hits in 7 1/3 innings, Vaughn also added an RBI single in the top of the 8th inning to give the Beavers a three run cushion. Freshman RHP Jake Hower recorded his 9th save of the year, just one shy of the school record set last year by Kevin Mattox (Rio Americano), by striking out three of the five batters he faced.

Offensively the Beavers were held in check by Marin starter John Quine, but the Beaver did manage a couple of runs in the 4th inning on a leadoff double by 1B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble), followed by a walk to SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde). C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) then singled to score Rinaudo and after a Chris Curtis (Glencoe, OR) bunt was mishandled to load the bases RF Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) singled to drive in Thennis. Muser was 3x3 on the day. The Beavers got another insurance run in the 9th after Chris Curtis walked then advance to 3rd on an errant pickoff throw. LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian, ID) then hit an infield single to drive in Curtis for the 4th and final run of the game.

The Beavers have now won 6 in a row and 14 of the last 15. This will be A.R.C.’s first 2nd round appearance since 2000 when the Beavers made it to the Final Four. Their first game will be Friday at 11 a.m. vs. the College of San Mateo at Cosumnes River College. Santa Rosa Junior College and Cosumnes River College are the other two teams in the four-team double-elimination bracket with the winner of the tournament advancing to the Final Four in Fresno Memorial Day weekend.

BEAVERS WILL HOST MARIN IN PLAYOFFS!!!

American River College drew the #6 seed in the Northern California regionals and will host the College of Marin at Beaver Field on Saturday and Sunday in a best 2 out of 3 format. The Beavers finished the regular season 27-10 overall and 18-8 in the Bay Valley Conference. Their 27 wins was eclipsed by only 7 other teams in the state, and just three in Northern California. In addition, A.R.C. won 18 of their last 22 games. After dropping 4 of the first 5 in conference the Beavers went 17 and 4 the rest of the way. The #6 seed is their best since being the #3 seed in 2002.

BEAVERS TAKE SEASON SERIES FROM COSUMNES, WIN THE LAST GAME

In an otherwise meaningless final game of the 2005 regular season, the 10th ranked Beavers defeated #2 ranked Cosumnes River College 7-5 at Jerry Conway Field to improve to 27-10 and finish with a conference record of 18-8. The win also clinches a tie for 2nd place with Sacramento City College. Both teams used much of their bullpen on the day, though Beaver starter Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) went a solid three innings before giving way to RHP Mike Hernandez (Woodland). Hernandez threw two innings which was followed by 1 2/3 innings by LHP Brandon Muser (Woodcreek), 1/3 of an inning by RHP Adam Clerici (El Dorado), 2/3 of an inning by LHP Brian Bates (Mira Loma), who was relieved by former Matador teammate Jeff Robinson. RHP Brandon Boyd (Esparto) came on in the 9th to record his first save of the season.

Offensively, the Beavers were led by Friday’s hero Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) who was 2x2 with 2 doubles, and fellow catcher Joe Finn (El Camino) who was 2x2 with a double of his own. Freshman Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) started at first base, then moved to 2nd base, then to left field and was 3x4 on the day. Rinaudo finishes his first year of BVC play by hitting .459 with 8 doubles, four triples, and a home run, plus 32 RBI in just 25 games.

For the Beavers, their conference record of 18-8 is their best since the 2002 season when they also went 18-8 and were led to the playoffs by National Junior College Player of the Year Manny Parra (Casa Roble). Playoff seedings and all-conference teams will be named on Monday.

BEAVERS WIN ON ERKEL’S WALK OFF HOMER

American River College defeated Sierra College Friday 7-6 on a 9th inning two run walk off home run by Beavers C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay). It was Erkel’s 2nd home run of the season. For the Beavers, the win clinched the season series against the visiting Sierra College Wolverines and clinched 3rd place, all but assuring A.R.C. of a playoff spot next weekend. With the win, A.R.C. improves to 26-10 on the year, 17-8 in the Bay Valley Conference. With A.R.C.’s win over the 6th ranked Wolverines, the Beavers could do no worse than tie for 3rd, but the Beavers would own the tie breaker based on head-to-head competition. 3rd place from the BVC East will surely go to the playoffs, while 4th place still has an outside chance. Because Cosumnes River College defeated Sacramento City College, the Hawks clinched the league championship with one game left to play. The best A.R.C. can do is to tie for 2nd place with a win over Cosumnes River on Saturday, however Sac City has the tie-breaker for the 2nd place automatic bid over the Beavers.

A.R.C. struck first off of Wolverine ace Loren Moneypenny when CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) laced a single to center to start off the game. After a Mike Willeford (Cordova) ground out moved Holtzen to second, 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) continued his hot hitting by singling up the middle to drive in Holtzen. It was Rinaudo’s 7th straight hit after going 6x6 against Yuba College on Tuesday and the 11th straight plate appearance that Rinaudo reached base. Before the Yuba game, Rinaudo had singled, doubled, been hit by a pitch, and reached on an error in his last four at bats against Delta College.

Sierra struck for four runs in the 4th inning off of Beavers ace Jason Maes (Folsom) thanks to a pair of walks and four singles. The only other inning that Sierra would score was the 6th when Maes hit the leadoff batter, then allowed a single and another hit batter to load the bases. From there A.R.C. brought in their closer Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) who would allow two of the runs to score but shut down the Wolverines from there. Hower picked up his fourth win of the season to go with his 8 saves. The Beavers would answer back in the bottom of the 6th trailing 6-2 by scoring three runs on doubles by LF Chris Curtis (Glencoe, OR), RF Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) and Garrett Holtzen, plus a balk by Sierra reliever Cory Kahn. The Beavers threatened in the 7th and 8th innings but could not tie up the score heading into the 9th. After Hower put down a Sierra 9th inning rally by getting Wolverine CF Chris Hopkins to fly out, the Beavers had just 3 outs to work with in their final regular season home game. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) struck out to lead off the 9th, but then 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) hit a sharp grounder to the right side in which the Sierra 2B knocked down but could not get Vaughn at first on a bang bang play. Then, with one out, on a 2-2 pitch Steven Erkel drove a fastball over the right field fence for a walk-off 2 run homer which saw the Beavers mob him at home plate, sending A.R.C. to the playoffs for the 16th time in the past 20 years.

The 10th ranked Beavers will find out their playoff destiny on Monday afternoon when the seeding committee meets to determine the first round of the 2005 postseason.

BEAVERS SWEEP SERIES WITH YUBA, RINAUDO SETS RECORD

American River College defeated Yuba College 16-10 on Tuesday giving the 10th ranked Beavers the series sweep over the 49ers. Freshman 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) set a school record with six hits, four singles a double and a triple. He tied a school record by scoring five runs in the game. He also added six RBI, giving him 40 on the season. The old record of 5 hits in a game was held by 9 former Beavers, tied most recently by Johnny Zepeda (Rio Linda) in 2004. The five runs scored is held by Dan Vetter of Del Campo High School set in 1993, Tony Hauser (El Camino/1998), Jason Wilkerson (Bella Vista/1999), Mike Fitzgerald (Jesuit/2000) and now Rinaudo.

The Beavers pounded out 17 hits on the day, including triples by SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) and 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) who was 3x3 with four RBI. CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) also added four hits in five at bats, drove in a pair of runs, stole a base, and scored four runs. A.R.C. scored in six of the eight innings that they were on offense, failing to score only in the 2nd and 5th innings.

RHP David Martin (Casa Roble) picked up his 5th win of the year despite some shaky defense and not his usual pinpoint control on the mound. Martin gave up 8 hits in 5 innings and did not walk a batter. RHP Matt Long (Woodland) came on in relief, throwing three innings. He allowed four unearned runs on three Beaver errors in the 8th inning. A.R.C.’s defense has been solid all year and had one of its worst lapses in the 8th inning, allowing Yuba to score on a wild throw, a dropped fly ball, and a missed potential double play ground ball.

American River College improves to 25-10 on the year, 16-8 in the Bay Valley Conference and is tied for third with Sierra College. They will face the Wolverines at Beaver Field on Friday, May 6 at 2:30 p.m. because of the rain out on Thursday. Yuba dropped to 9-25 on the year, 5-19 in the BVC.

BEAVERS TAKE SEASON SERIES FROM DELTA

American River College did something that it has not done since the 1998 season; win two out of three conference games from San Joaquin Delta College in a season. On Saturday the Beavers scored three times in the first inning and nine times in the 5th inning to defeat the Mustangs 14-8. The 10th ranked Beavers got on the board early off of Delta starter Ernie Lopez. Leadoff hitter and CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) and 2B Mike Willeford (Cordova) walked in their first at bats. After a Chris Rinaudo fly out, SS Doug Thennis singled up the middle to score Holtzen and put the Beavers up 1-0. DH Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) then laced a double down the right field line to score Willeford and Thennis putting the Beavers up 3-0.

The bottom of the first was a shaky one for starter Jason Maes (Folsom) who has been very effective lately. After hitting the second batter of the game, the Delta Dh singled to score the runner. After a two out walk Mustang LF Chris Lester hit a grounder to short which Doug Thennis mishandled allowing a run to score and the inning to continue. Delta then got two more singles to put 5 runs across in the first for the Mustangs.

Both pitchers settled down until the 5th inning when A.R.C. pushed across nine runs off of three different pitchers to essentially lock up the game. The inning consisted of nine hits, one walk, two hit batters, and a sacrifice fly from RF Brandon Muser (Woodcreek). Mike Willeford and Doug Thennis each had two hits in the inning, with Thennis having four of his season high five RBI in the 5th inning. He leads the team with 41 RBI on the year. After the 5th, the Beavers put up single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to keep Delta at bay. The Mustangs did manage to score single runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings, but it was not enough for a comeback.

RHP Matt Long (Woodland) saw his first action since hurting his wrist in the on-deck circle April 2nd. Long worked two innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit, two hit batters, and five strikeouts.

With the win the Beavers remain two games out of first place and just one out of second. The top two teams are guaranteed placement in the Northern California playoffs, but there are several at-large bids that could end up going to the Beavers if they do not finish in the top two. A.R.C. is currently 24-10 and 15-8 in the Bay Valley Conference. They return home on Tuesday, May 3 to face the Yuba College 49ers at 2:30 p.m.

BEAVERS LOSE SLUGFEST, DROP INTO 4th

American River College pounded out 13 hits versus Solano College on Thursday, but was still out hit by four as the Falcons handed the 10th ranked Beavers their 3rd home loss of the year, 8-6. The Beavers scored first, taking a 5-0 lead off of Falcons starter Eric Platano with five runs in the 3rd inning. A.R.C. got a one out single by RF Joe Belli (Ponderosa) which was followed by a single up the middle by CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista). After 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) grounded out the Beavers got four hits and a walk by the next five batters. 1B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) had a two run single to right center, while C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) and 2B Chris Curtis (Glencoe, OR) each added RBI singles.

RHP/DH Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) was cruising along with a five run lead until the 7th inning when the first four batters singled, cutting the Beavers lead to 5-3. In the 8th inning the Falcons opened the inning with 9 straight hits, 8 of them singles, off of four different A.R.C. pitchers. RHP Brandon Boyd (Esparto) was tagged with the loss, his first of the season after giving up four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Beavers threatened and made it interesting in the 9th but could not pull off one of their patented comebacks. PH Robby Chavez (Elk Grove) led off the 9th by getting hit by a 3-2 fastball from Falcon reliever Travis Hermann. Chris Rinaudo then singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) then flew out to right which moved Chavez to third. Nick Vaughn then singled in Chavez to make the score 8-6 and put the tying run on base. Steve Erkel hit into a fielders choice and Chris Curtis walked to put runners at 1st and 3rd with two outs, but LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian, ID) flew out to right on the first pitch he saw to end the game.

A.R.C. drops to 23-10 on the season and 14-8 in conference play which puts them 1½ games behind Sac City for third place and 2 games behind Sierra and Cosumnes River College for first. The Beavers will travel to Stockton on Saturday to face the San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs at 1:00 p.m. Delta is 2 games behind A.R.C. in fifth place. The two teams have split the previous two games with Delta winning 7-6 in 10 innings at home at American River College taking a 4-1 victory at Beaver Field. LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) will be on the mound for the Beavers.

BEAVERS WEATHER THE STORM

The #11 ranked American River College baseball team defeated the Napa Valley College Storm 9-5 at Beaver Field on Thursday. Things started out shaky for the Beavers as the starting pitcher David Martin (Casa Roble) was hit around for 6 hits and 3 runs in just 3 1/3 innings. Martin was coming off of two stellar outings in his previous two starts. Fortunately for A.R.C. RHP Brandon Boyd (Esparto) came in and scattered five hits over five innings to keep Napa in check and give the Beavers offense the time it needed to once again work its come from behind magic.

The Beavers trailed 3-1 heading into the 5th inning when LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian, ID) led off with a single to right. With one out CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) singled to advance Belli to 2nd. 3B Mike Willeford then hit a line drive to center which hit off of Napa CF Athan Putnam’s glove for an error. Belli then scored on a wild pitch to bring the Beavers within one. 1B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) then grounded out to 3rd scoring Holtzen and tying the game at three. The next batter, SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) then drilled the first pitch he saw off of the center field fence for a stand up double, his 9th of the year. Napa then tied the game at four apiece in the top of the sixth, but the Beavers responded with four of their own in the bottom half, with the big blow being a two run triple down the right field line by Garrett Holtzen. Mike Willeford then singled home Holtzen and Chris Rinaudo hit his 10th double of the season which scored Willeford all the way from first. The Beavers added an insurance run in the 8th when RF Joe Belli (Ponderosa) doubled to left then scored on a wild pitch.

RHP Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) came on in the 9th with two runners on and the score 9-5. After walking the first batter he saw Hower got a game ending double play to pick up his 8th save of the year. Hower’s 8th save is the second best save total in Beaver history and puts the freshman tied for 3rd all-time for career saves at American River College. Brandon Boyd improved his record to 2-0 on the year. The 11th ranked Beavers improve to 22-9 overall, their best start since the 2000 season when they went to the Final Four. The Beavers also improve to 13-7 in the Bay Valley Conference. A.R.C. will travel down the road on Saturday, April 23 to face #3 ranked Sacramento City College at Union Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

BEAVERS MAKE IT FIVE IN A ROW

The 13th ranked American River College baseball team won for the fifth straight game on Tuesday, defeating the #9 ranked Marin College Mariners 4-1 at Beaver Field. The Beavers used solid pitching from starter Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) who threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits. For Vaughn it was his third straight solid start, and he improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to a team best 2.27. A.R.C. got on the board first on a leadoff double by CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista). The Beavers executed well as 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) grounded out to 2nd to move Holtzen to 3rd. Holtzen then scored on a groundout by C Steven Erkel (Granite Bay) to make the score 1-0. The Beavers got another run in the 2nd inning after 1B Robby Chavez (Elk Grove) laced a single to center, then stole 2nd base. RF Joe Belli (Ponderosa) reached on an error by the Marin 3rd baseman. With two outs Garrett Holtzen then singled up the middle to score Chavez to make the score 2-0. Both teams bats were silent until the 7th inning when Garrett Holtzen got his 3rd hit of the day, a liner up the middle in which the Marin 2B Kevin Webster made a nice play to get a glove on the ball, but his throw sailed into the dugout allowing Holtzen to get to 2nd. Steven Erkel then drove a 2-2 pitch onto the softball field behind the right field fence for his first home run of the season and his 3rd RBI of the game. After Vaughn allowed a run in the 8th freshman right hander Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) came on in relief, working 1 1/3 innings for his team leading 7th save. The game ended on a nice double play turned by 2B Chris Curtis (Glencoe, OR) who came into the baseline to field the grounder, tagged the runner and threw off-balance to first to end the game.

The Beavers improve to 21-9 overall and 12-7 in their final year in the Bay Valley Conference. A.R.C. returns to action Thursday, April 21 to play host to the visiting Napa Valley College Storm at 2:30 p.m. David Martin (Casa Roble) will be on the mound for the Beavers.

BEAVERS FINISH OFF 4 GAME WEEK WITH A BANG

For the first four innings at Contra Costa on Saturday the American River College baseball team looked nothing like the 2nd best hitting club in the state. They managed to get one ball out of the infield, a single up the middle by SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) off of CCC starter Ed Davila. In the 5th inning however, the Beavers bats woke up, scoring 6 times, including RBI doubles by LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian, ID) and CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista). The Beavers would add two more in the 6th inning with a two run single from 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova), one of his four hits on the day. A.R.C. was not done though. In the 7th inning they added 7 more runs, two on a bases loaded double by RF Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) and two on a single to right by Thennis. The 16 runs was the most by the Beavers this season. LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) was in complete control the whole time, scattering four hits and four strikeouts through 6 1/3 innings. The big lefty did not walk a batter and improved his record to 5-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.00. RHP Brandon Boyd (Esparto) came on to allow only an unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of work, and he struck out three. RHP Adam Clerici (El Dorado) worked a scoreless 9th to preserve the Beavers most lopsided win of the year.

The 13th ranked Beavers completed a four game sweep of the week which included two wins over Los Medanos College, a 4-3 extra inning win over #7 Santa Rosa and the 16-1 over the 15th ranked Contra Costa Comets. The Beavers will take on #11 College of Marin today, April 19 at 2:30 p.m. at Beaver Field. A.R.C. will enter the contest with an overall record of 20-9, 11-7 in the BVC East. Marin is 18-11, 12-7 and in 2nd place in the BVC West.

COMEBACK KIDS

American River College pulled off another comeback at Santa Rosa on Thursday, and was able to hold onto the lead to defeat the Bear Cubs 4-3 in a BVC crossover matchup. Santa Rosa RHP Will Morgan baffled the Beavers hitters for the first six innings, limiting them to just two hits. The Beavers finally got on the board in the 7th when 1B Nick Vaughn’s (Oak Ridge) leadoff single allowed him to get to 2nd base on an error by the leftfielder. It was the second straight BVC game where an A.R.C. player took second on a hustle play as a left fielder fumbled for the ball. With C Steve Erkel’s (Granite Bay) single to right moving Vaughn to 3rd, LF Chris Curtis (Glencoe, OR) grounded out to 1st to score Vaughn. This made the score 3-1. The Beavers finally got into the Santa Rosa bullpen in the 8th inning and were able to touch up S.R.J.C. RF/RHP Ray Silva for a pair of runs in the 9th inning. Chris Curtis led off the 9th with an infield single. After DH Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) flew out, PH Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) laced a double down the right field line to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) grounded out to first to drive in the 2nd run for A.R.C. and put the tying run just 90 feet away. McDonough would score easily to tie the game when 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) drove a 2-0 fastball from Silva down the right field line for his 4th double of the season to tie the game. As the game went into extra innings, the Beavers would get a run when Nick Vaughn drove a 2-1 pitch from Silva over the center field fence for his 3rd home run of the season. Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) would come on in the 10th to record his 7th save of the year. Freshman RHP David Martin (Casa Roble) overcame some shaky defense in the first inning to limit the Bear Cubs to just 5 hits over 9 innings of work. Martin also recorded a career high 8 strikeouts while walking only one. He improves his record to 4-1. Martin cruised through the later innings, needing only eight pitches in the 6th inning and six pitches in the 7th and 8th innings. In fact, he threw more than 16 pitches in an inning only once, the 3rd inning he threw 17 pitches.

With the win over the #7 ranked Bear Cubs, the 13th ranked Beavers improve to 19-9 overall and 10-7 in BVC play. This was the Beavers first Bay Valley Conference win over Santa Rosa since a 6-3 victory in 1997, though A.R.C. has beaten Santa Rosa in non-league and in the post-season since then. In 2000 A.R.C. defeated SRJC in a tournament game in February and in the regionals to go to the Final Four, but dropped their conference game 19-16 at A.R.C. when Santa Rosa SS Randy Blankenship was 3x5 with a double and 2 home runs, including a grand slam in the 3rd inning.

A.R.C. and Santa Rosa will face each other four times next year as members of the BIG 7 Conference. A.R.C. moves on to face #15 Contra Costa Saturday in San Pablo at 1:00 p.m.

BEAVERS COMPLETE DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

American River College took both games of the Tuesday afternoon twin bill at Beaver Field, winning the first game 6-3 and taking the second game 12-10. A.R.C. recorded 31 hits on the day. Game one was the originally scheduled Bay Valley Conference game which saw Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) scatter 11 hits over 8 innings to pick up his 2nd win of the season. Closer Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) came in in the 9th inning to record his 6th save of the year. Offensively, C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) continued his hot hitting going 4x4 with a ground rule double in the 3 run 7th inning that helped seal the victory for the Beavers. Five of the six A.R.C. runs came with two outs. Sophomore 2B Chris Curtis (Glencoe, OR) delivered the big blow, a two strike, two out, two run single to right to give the Beavers the lead. LF Brandon Muser (Woodcreek), SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde), and 1B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) all had three hits on the day with Muser and Thennis each contributing a pair of RBIs.

In the second game five Beaver pitchers combined to pick up the win from a previously rained out non-conference game. Adam Clerici (El Dorado), Brandon Boyd (Esparto), Jeff Robinson (Mira Loma), and Mike Hernandez (Woodland) all pitched two innings with Robinson picking up his second win of the season. LHP Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) worked the 9th to pick up his first save of the year. LF Andy Harris (River City) was 2x4 and scored 3 times while SS Marques Caesar (Del Oro) was 4x4 with 3 RBI and a double to lead the Beavers. 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) was 2x3 with a triple and his team leading 10th double of the year in addition to picking up a pair of RBI’s for A.R.C.

The 13th ranked Beavers improve to 18-9 overall while moving up to 9-7 in the BVC. They now begin a two game road trip to 7th ranked Santa Rosa J.C. on Thursday and 15th ranked Contra Costa on Saturday, April 16.

BEAVERS LOSE IT AT HOME

American River College lost at Beaver Field for just the second time this season 5-2 vs. Diablo Valley College on Saturday. The Beavers wasted a gem of a pitching performance by LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) who struck out 11 and allowed just 3 hits in 7 innings.

The Beavers scored twice in the 1st inning. After a leadoff walk and stolen base by CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista), 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) singled to right to score Holtzen. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) then hit a one out double to right putting runners at 2nd and 3rd. DH Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) then legged out an infield single scoring a run, but Thennis slipped coming around 3rd and was thrown out. That would be the end of the scoring for the Beavers who were held to their lowest scoring total in 15 conference games.

The 8th inning had been the big comeback inning for the Beavers all year, but Saturday it was for DVC. With LHP Brian Bates (Mira Loma) replacing Maes, Vikings CF Mike McIntyre singled up the middle. Bates then walked the next batter and when RF Terrell Harbin bunted right back to Bates, it looked like the Beavers would get an easy out. Mike Willeford was unable to catch the throw from Bates however and DVC tied the score on the error. A.R.C. then brought in RHP Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) who gave up a single over the drawn in infield to give DVC the lead. Hower then hit the next batter and with the bases loaded he walked in the 4th run for DVC. Leadoff hitter Alonso Rivera then hit an 0-2 pitch to CF for a sac fly giving DVC a 5-2 lead.

The Beavers are now 16-9 on the season and 8-7 in BVC play. They will play a double header against Los Medanos College on Tuesday, April 12 at Beaver Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. The first game will be a BVC contest while the second game will be a makeup from the February 18 rainout.

MARTIN PITCHES BEAVERS TO WIN

American River College logged more miles and a couple more hours on the bus Tuesday and still managed to come away with a 6-3 victory at Laney College in Oakland. David Martin (Casa Roble) threw his first career complete game, allowing only five hits while striking out seven and walking none. Martin threw only 95 pitches all game in improving his record to 3-1. The Beavers improved to 16-8, 8-6 in BVC play. Martin was so effective, six of the nine innings he worked were 3 up 3 down. Offensively, the Beavers managed 14 hits as well as 8 walks, but only managed to scrape together 6 runs. C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) led the way by going 4x4 with 2 doubles, including one off of the 410 sign on the center field fence. CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) had a couple of hits including a double to left center and stole a pair of bases bringing his team leading total to 12 for the season. 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) continued to produce. Despite only having one hit on the day he drove in a pair of runs and stole a base as well. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) also notched a pair of hits.

The #12 ranked Beavers will return home Saturday, April 9th at 1:00 p.m. to face the Diablo Valley College Vikings. LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) will be on the mound for A.R.C.

BEAVERS START CROSSOVER ROUND WITH A WIN

American River College made the long trip to Mendocino College in Ukiah Tuesday and came out on top 8-6 in Nick Vaughn’s (Oak Ridge) first pitching start of the year. Vaughn breezed through the first 6 innings allowing just four hits, and was aided by a couple of double plays. The 7th got a little rocky however, as the Eagles led off with three straight hits and a hit batsman to chase Vaughn. The Beavers brought in LHP Brian Bates (Mira Loma) who walked the first batter he saw, then got a sac fly to record the first out of the inning. After an error by 1B Robby Chavez (Elk Grove) allowed the Eagles to tie the score at 5, Bates got Mendo catcher Beau Milner to hit an inning ending 6-4-3 double play

The Beavers trailed 1-0 in the top of the 4th when the bats came alive. 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) led off with a BB, which was followed by 2B Chris Rinaudo’s (Casa Roble) 8th double of the season. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) then hit the first pitch to the center field fence for a 2 run double. After a Nick Vaughn walk LF Chris Curtis (Glencoe OR) blooped an RBI single to right scoring Thennis. Vaughn also scored when an errant throw trying to get Curtis at second sailed into right field allowing Curtis to advance to third. He scored on a groundout by C Steven Erkel (Granite Bay). After Mendocino tied it up in the 7th, the Beavers came back and scored twice with 2 outs to chase Mendo starter Gregg Buschmann. The scoring was capped by another Curtis RBI single to right. Mendocino made it interesting in the 8th off of closer Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) when a leadoff walk was followed by a two out walk, then a single to center made the game 7-6. The Beavers got it back in the 9th however when CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) picked up his 3rd hit of the game, an RBI single to center.

Brian Bates picked up his 2nd win of the year and Hower recorded his 5th save. A.R.C. returns to the road tomorrow traveling to Laney College in Oakland for a 2:30 p.m. start. The Beavers are 15-8 overall, 7-6 in BVC play.

BEAVERS COME BACK TO VICTORY

They did it again, the cardiac kids came back from a 5-2 deficit at Beaver Field on Saturday, April 2nd to defeat the #1 ranked Cosumnes River College Hawks 7-5. American River was led by left hander Jason Maes (Folsom) who improved his record to 4-1 on the year by throwing his second complete game of the year. Maes scattered 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8 for his team leading 4th win. The Beavers improve to 14-8 overall and 6-6 in BVC East play. They are currently ranked #14 in Northern California.

Cosumnes River got on the board in the first inning, scoring twice, once on a groundout to first and the second on a wild pitch. The Beavers answered back in the 2nd inning with 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) hitting his second home run of the year, a solo blast to left center. The Beavers scored again in the 3rd on a bases loaded walk by SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde). Cosumnes got it back in the 5th however, scoring three times on a couple of singles on a missed pop-up by Doug Thennis. A.R.C. got back to within one run in the 5th inning after an RBI single by 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) and a botched double steal which allowed 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) to score. Unlike the past two games where the Beavers got 8th inning three run home runs to get back into the game, they started early this time. In the 7th inning, with 2 outs and nobody on, Willeford hit a chopper to 3rd which Hawk 3B Ryan Martin couldn’t handle. Chris Rinaudo then walked which forced Hawks coach Tony Bloomfield to bring in reliever Andrew Troncale to face SS Doug Thennis. Thennis hit Troncale’s first pitch, a changeup over the left field fence, just missing the scoreboard to give the Beavers the 7-5 lead they would not give up. American River College now starts the crossover round of BVC play, where each team from the East will play a single game against each team from the West. The Beavers travel to Mendocino College on Tuesday, April 5th in Ukiah and to Oakland to play Laney College on Thursday, April 7th. Both games will be at 2:30 p.m. They return home on Saturday, April 9th to face Diablo Valley College at 1:00 p.m.

DÉJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN

For the second consecutive day the American River College baseball team spotted their opponents an 8-0 lead, only to come back and then fall short in the end. The Beavers who are currently leading the state in batting average staged another miraculous comeback, in fact taking a 9-8 lead into the 9th inning, but ended up on the losing end when Cosumnes River College DH Aaron Demuth hit an 11th inning home run that seemed to curve around the foul pole, but was ruled a game winning two run blast. The Hawks scored early and often off of Beaver’s starter David Martin (Casa Roble), who gave up a solo home run in the 1st inning, 2 runs in the 2nd inning, and then was relieved by RHP Matt Long (Woodland) in the 5 run 3rd inning. Long settled things down however as the Beavers began to chip away at CRC starter Mike Hacker. An RBI single by C Joe Finn (El Camino) got things started for ARC who then scored 3 times in the 6th inning without recording a hit. With 2 outs and nobody on, back to back walks by 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) and Joe Finn, was followed by DH Mike Hernandez (Woodland) reaching on an error. ARC then got bases loaded walks by LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) and CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) and a wild pitch on strike three to RF Joe Belli (Ponderosa) to bring the score to 8-4. The improbable comeback happened again in the 8th inning for the Beavers after 3 consecutive 2 out singles by Belli, Holtzen, and 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) brought the score to 8-6. 2B Chris Rinaudo then did his best Joe Finn impression, driving a 3 run home run over the fence in left center field to give ARC a 9-8 lead. The Beavers held the lead through the 8th, but in the 9th a 1 out single by CRC 1B Dan Code gave the Hawks the baserunner they would need to tie the game on an error by Vaughn at 1B. In the 11th, RHP Jake Hower (Eagle Crest, CO) retired the first two batters he faced, then gave up a sharp single to right by CF Brandon Haislett. DeMuth then hit a 2-0 fastball right down the left field line which the umpire ruled was inside the foul pole for a walk-off 2 run homer.

The #14 Beavers return home tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. to face #1 Cosumnes River, with LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) being on the mound for ARC. American River is now 13-8 overall, 5-6 in BVC play.

BEAVERS COME BACK, LOSE ON A WILD ONE

For 7 innings on Wednesday the American River College baseball team looked as if they would go down quietly at Sierra College. Heading into the top of the 8th inning the Beavers were trailing 8-1 and had not put much of a scare into Wolverine starter Josh Baas. But in the 8th with one out 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) reached on a wild pitch after striking out and that brought the Beavers bats to life. PH Benito Osuna (Lincoln) followed with a double to center, which was also followed by a double to center by C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay). DH Matt Long (Woodland) then drilled a two run single. Later, 2 out singles by 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) and 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) pulled the score to 8-6. After reliever Jeff Robinson (Mira Loma) allowed a run in the bottom of the 8th, the Beavers trailed by 3 going into the 9th. A leadoff single by Vaughn was followed by a single from Osuna, which brought up the new catcher, Joe Finn (El Camino). Finn took a 3-2 fastball from reliever Charles Robertson and hit it over the left field fence for his first career home run and tied the game at 9. The Beavers then got a single from Long and RF Joe Belli (Ponderosa) reached on a bunt. A.R.C. could not score anymore though and took a tie game into the bottom of the 9th. With one out Sierra CF Chris Hopkins walked, then advanced to 3rd on a single by LF Gary Johnson. After an intentional walk, Jake Hower’s (Eagle Crest, CO) first pitch to DH Ryan Deakyne was wild and Hopkins scored the game winner. The Beavers dropped to 13-7 on the year, 5-5 in BVC play. They return to action today at Cosumnes River College at 2:30 p.m.

SPRING BREAK GOOD TO THE BEAVERS

When the rain finally stopped the American River College baseball team was able to pick up three wins in three days during Spring Break. With the rain postponing Saturday and Tuesday’s games against Yuba College the Beavers outdueled Sierra College at home on Thursday 3-2. Freshman 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) started his impressive week with a 3x3 performance, driving in 2 runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the 8th inning. Sophomore lefty Jason Maes (Folsom) had another strong outing, allowing only 3 hits over 7 1/3 innings, while striking out 8.

On Friday the Beavers traveled to Yuba College to make up one of the rainouts, and the bats were alive as ARC scored early and often in the 10-6 victory. Mike Willeford (Cordova) led the way with 4 hits on the day, including his 3rd double of the season, and 2B Chris Rinaudo added three more hits and two more RBI. David Martin (Casa Roble) held the 49ers scoreless through the first 7 innings, but Yuba scored 4 times in the 8th inning and twice in the 9th off of Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) to make the game interesting.

The Beavers returned to Beaver Field on Saturday to face Yuba again, and 49ers lefty Will Meier managed to keep the Beavers bats under control until the 8th inning. With Yuba ahead 3-2, reliever Ryan Melendez replaced Meier and gave up a leadoff single to 3B Mike Willeford. 2B Chris Rinaudo then hit the first pitch he saw into the left field corner for a game tying triple, his second triple of the day. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Rinaudo, giving A.R.C. the lead. With two outs, pinch hitter Brandon Muser legged out an infield single which was followed by a Steven Erkel (Granite Bay) RBI triple to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead. Freshman right hander Jake Hower (Eaglecrest, CO) came on in relief in the 8th inning and worked a scoreless 9th to pick up his second win of the season.

American River College has now won four in a row and improves their record to 13-7 on the year, 5-4 in Bay Valley Conference play. A.R.C. is currently ranked #16 in Northern California and is tied with #8 Sierra College for 3rd place in the Bay Valley Conference East. The Beavers will travel to Sierra College in Rocklin on Tuesday, March 29 at 2:30 p.m. and then will face #1 ranked and first place Cosumnes River College at CRC on Thursday, March 31 and at home on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m.

MAES COMPLETE GAME LEADS BEAVERS TO WIN

On a day when the Beavers bats were unusually quiet, A.R.C. finally got the pitching performance they were looking for, a complete game by sophomore LHP Jason Maes (Folsom), who scattered 8 hits, struck out 11 and walked only one on the day to lead the Beavers to a 4-1 victory. The win gives A.R.C. their 10th victory of the season against 6 losses, and pulls them up to 2-4 in conference play. Maes rarely struggled, and only two of the hits were hit hard by the Mustangs 5-11, 1-7 in BVC play. Offensively the Beavers were held to 8 hits, just the 3rd time all year they have had less than 10 hits in a game. 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble), 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) and 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova) each had a pair of hits, with Vaughn adding 2 RBI and SS Chris Curtis adding an RBI triple in the 3 run 4th inning for A.R.C. The beavers will stay at home on Saturday to face Yuba College at 1:00 p.m. RHP Matt Long (Woodland) will make his first start of the year since recovering from a broken foot.

BEAVERS GIVE ANOTHER ONE AWAY AT DELTA

American River College gave away a two run lead in the bottom of the 9th inning and then lost on a two out error in the 10th inning to fall 7-6 at Delta College on Tuesday. It was the Beavers 5th loss in their last 6 games. The Beavers opened the game with two runs on a Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) RBI triple, and a Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) sac fly. Delta followed with 3 runs in the bottom of the first off of starter David Martin (Casa Roble). A.R.C. then got a run in the 2nd on an RBI fielders choice by 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova). In the 3rd the Beavers pulled ahead 5-3 on an RBI double by 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) and a sac fly by C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay). In the 6th inning the Beavers added another run when Willeford scored on Nick Vaughn’s 2nd double of the game. The Beavers took a 6-4 lead into the 9th inning but freshman closer Jake Hower (Eaglecrest CO) was not able to hold the lead after allowing two singles to start the inning, he threw a wild pitch that allowed the runners to move up to 2nd and 3rd. Two straight ground balls resulted in fielders choices which allowed the runners to score and tie the game. In the 10th, Nick Vaughn came on to pitch and walked the first batter he saw. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to 2nd and a deep fly out to LF Benito Osuna (Lincoln) moved the runner to 3rd. On a 3-1 pitch Delta centerfielder Riley Gamello hit a slow roller to SS Doug Thennis who threw wide to first allowing the game winning run to score. In the past 5 years the Beavers record versus the Mustangs is now 3-13. The #15 ranked Beavers return to action tomorrow to face Delta College at A.R.C. at 2:30 p.m. A.R.C. is currently 9-6, 1-4 in BVC play. LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) will be on the mound.

7 RUN 3RD BLOWS BEAVERS AWAY

The wind was howling straight out to center on Saturday, and the Solano College Falcons used it to their advantage in recording a 12-9 victory over the Beavers at Solano College. The Falcons hit two 2 run home runs in the 7th inning, and a two run misjudged pop-up cost the Beavers who fell to 9-5 overall, 1-3 in the BVC. Falcon CF Greg Fyfe and C Chris Brown each belted two run shots off of starter Mike Hernandez (Woodland) who suffered his first career loss in an A.R.C. uniform. The Falcons out hit the Beavers 16-12 on the day. It was Solano’s first BVC win of the season and first win against the Beavers in three games this season. Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) added his 2nd home run of the season, a two run shot in the 5th inning, and was robbed of a three run shot in the 8th by Solano RF J.D. Poplin. DH Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) was 2x3 on the day with a two run double in the 2nd inning. CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) added three hits and scored three runs on the day. A.R.C. used 6 pitchers on the day, including RHP Matt Long (Woodland), who made his first appearance after suffering a broken foot early in January. BEAVERS HOLD ON FOR WIN

American River College got back on the winning track Thursday defeating Solano College 6-4 at the ARC. The Beavers used 5 hits and an error in the 3rd inning to take a 5-1 lead, and then held on when Jake Hower (EagleCrest CO) induced a bases loaded 4-6-3 double play by Solano’s Pat Lemelle to end the game. LHP Jason Maes (Folsom) improved his record to 2-1 on the season, while Hower picked up his team leading 3rd save. The Beavers 3rd inning rally started with a leadoff triple by DH Brandon Muser (Woodcreek), who scored when CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) drilled the first pitch he saw for a single up the middle. LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) also singled in a run, which was followed by a Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) double to left. 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) then hit one of his two singles for the day to drive in a run, and 3B Chris Curtis (Glencoe OR) hita sac fly to RF to score Thennis. Vaughn. Curtis, Muser, and C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) all had two hits on the day. The Beavers improved to 9-4 on the season and 1-2 in BVC play. They return to action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Solano. The game will be played at the Solano College campus field.

BEAVERS RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 9th.

#9 ranked American River College put up four runs in the 9th inning versus #1 ranked Sacramento City College on Thursday, but it was not enough to overcome the 9-3 deficit as Sac City improved to 2-0 in conference play at Beaver Field. It was the Beavers first loss at home on the season. A.R.C. jumped out to a lead for the second straight time versus SCC by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Just as it happened on Tuesday, the Panthers responded by plating four runs in the top of the 4th to take a 4-2 lead. Sac City LF Curtis Hudson dealt the big blow with a bases loaded double. The Panthers scored four more times off of Beaver starter Jason Maes (Folsom) in the 7th inning with C Ben Petralli driving a two run double to left field. The Beavers did not quit though, as they scored one in the 8th inning off of reliever Chris Raulinaitis with three straight singles by 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble), SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde), and 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge). A.R.C. scored four times in the 9th with a leadoff double by C Steve Erkel (Granite Bay), followed by a pinch hit single to center by Benito Osuna (Lincoln). DH Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) then walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored pinch runner Andy Harris (River City), and CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) grounded out to second to drive in a run. Pinch Hitter Joe Belli (Ponderosa) then drove a shot over the centerfielders head for an RBI triple. Chris Rinaudo then grounded out to score Belli for his second RBI of the game. The rally ended however when Doug Thennis’ two out drive to center was caught on the run at the warning track by Panther CF Jason Dean. The Beavers dropped their third straight game and are now 8-4 (0-2) and have two byes. Their next game will be Thursday, March 10 versus Solano College at 2:30 p.m. at Beaver Field.

BEAVERS CAN’T HOLD ON TO BIG LEAD

American River College began their final season of Bay Valley Conference play on Tuesday with a bang, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead versus cross-town rival Sacramento City College. The lead would be short lived however, as the Beavers would give up 2 in the 3rd inning, 4 in the 4th, and 2 more in the 5th inning to tie the game. The Beavers self destructed in the 8th, after a leadoff walk and then a hit batter, Sac City C Ben Petralli bunted right back to the mound where A.R.C. reliever Jake Hower (EagleCrest CO) had an easy out at 3rd but threw the ball away, allowing the go ahead run to score. After the next two batters flew out Steve Marquez hit an 0-2 changeup for a double down the right field line to score 2 runners and make the score 11-8 Sac City.

The Beavers did all of their damage in the 3rd inning off of Sac City ace Jason Roach. LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) led off by reaching on a throwing error by 2B Brandon Aoki. Joe Finn (El Camino) then followed with a double down the left field line. DH Robby Chavez (Elk Grove) then singled to right scoring McDonough. CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) then hit an infield single which scored Finn. After a sacrifice bunt by 3B Mike Willeford (Cordova), 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) ripped a single to left scoring two. SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) and 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) then singled, with Rinaudo scoring aon a throwing error by the Panther CF Karl Pflugrath. RF Chris Curtis then lined a double to left scoring Thennis and Vaughn to put the Beavers ahead 7-0. Curtis later scored on a wild pitch. Curtis and Garrett Holtzen each had 3 hits on the day.

The Beavers return home on Thursday to face the Panthers again at 2:30 p.m. Jason Maes (Folsom) will pitch for the Beavers while the Panthers will start Drew Carpenter on the mound. The Beavers are now 8-3 overall, 0-1 in BVC play.

BEAVERS TAKE TWO OUT OF THREE IN BAY AREA

American River College went West on Highway 80 for the first time in 15 years for a non-conference weekend and came out on top in two of the three games. The Beavers faced #3 ranked Chabot College on Friday and defeated the Gladiators 12-7, banging out 18 hits, including their first two home runs of the year. In the 3rd inning SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) and 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) went back to back to help lead the Beavers. Thennis was 7x9 on the weekend with a home run, two doubles, 4 RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Sophomore RHP Brandon Boyd (Esparto) picked up his first win of the season, throwing 4 1/3 innings of relief.

On Saturday the Beavers traveled to the #4 ranked College of San Mateo, defeating the host Bulldogs 7-1 on a stellar performance by RHP Mike Hernandez (Woodland). It was his first career start, and he lasted 6 1/3 innings, walking none and allowing just four hits. His career record is now 4-0, 2-0 this season. A.R.C. outslugged the Bulldogs 12-5, with Doug Thennis leading the way, going 4x5 with 2 doubles and a big two run single in the 7th inning. Nick Vaughn came on in relief of Hernandez in the 7th inning, getting out of a bases loaded, no out situation.

After the San Mateo game the Beavers traveled back across the San Mateo Bridge to face Chabot College again, but were outscored 5-1 to break the Beavers 8 game win streak. A.R.C.’s offense was brought down to earth by Chabot starter James Gilbert, who allowed just 4 hits in 6 innings of work. Starter David Martin (Casa Roble) took the loss for the Beavers, evening his record to 1-1. Martin overcame a shaky start, walking the first three batters of the game, then allowing a double to Gladiator clean up hitter Andy Darnell and a single to the DH John Dominguez to put Chabot up 3-0. He then threw four 3 up- 3 down innings before a 2 out hit batter was followed by a double by Dominguez to stretch Chabot’s lead to 4-1.

The Beavers open up conference play this week versus #1 ranked and crosstown rival Sacramento City College (5-4) on Tuesday at 2:30 at Sac City. The pitching matchup will pit lefties Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) versus Jason Roach. On Thursday the Beavers return home to face the Panthers again, with Jason Maes (Folsom) facing Drew Carpenter. The Beavers are currently 8-2.

BEAVERS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO 6 GAMES

American River College defeated Bay Valley Conference foe Solano College 6-5 Tuesday, February 22 in a non-conference game at Beaver Field. The game was played as a makeup for the Beavers being rained out versus College of the Sequoias on Thursday, February 17 and Solano being rained out versus Lassen College. Jason Maes (Folsom) picked up his first win of the season in his first start, striking out 5 in 6 innings of work. Maes allowed an unearned run in the first inning, then four runs in a strange 2nd inning, in which the Falcons scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The last run was scored on a fielders choice in which a ground ball was hit to SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) with runners on 1st and 2nd. Thennis went to tag 2nd but the runner was safe. The hitter, 1B Pat Lemelle was out at 1st, and the runner from 2nd, RF JD Poplin was apparently thrown out at the plate trying to score. The home plate umpire ruled that catcher Joe Finn (El Camino) blocked the plate before he had the ball, thus interference was called and the run was allowed to score. The Beavers took the lead in the 1st inning on a leadoff 2B by CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) who then stole third and scored on a single by 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble). After another single by Thennis, a double steal put runners at 2nd and 3rd. 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) hit a sharp ground ball to 1st scoring Rinaudo, and a bad flip to the pitcher allowed Thennis to score the third run of the inning. In the 3rd inning, with A.R.C. down 5-3, LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) drove in two with a line drive to right in which the Falcons RF Poplin dove but could not come up with the ball. C Joe Finn then followed with a single to right which scored McDonough, thus ending the scoring for the day. For the first time all year the Beavers were out hit 10-7. It also marks the first time this season that the Beavers have knocked less than 10 hits in a game. Freshman Jake Hower (Eagle Crest CO) came on in the 7th inning, working 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save, his first of the year. A.R.C improves to 6-1 in the preseason and will take on #3 Chabot College and the #4 ranked College of San Mateo in the Bay Area this weekend. A.R.C will make up its rainout versus Los Medanos on Tuesday, April 12 as part of a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Beaver Field. The rained out game versus San Jose City College will likely be made up during Spring Break, the week of March 21.

BEAVERS SWEEP G. V. C. SERIES, IMPROVE TO 5-1

The American River College baseball team defeated visiting Feather River College 7-4 on Saturday, February 12 to complete its three game sweep of ranked Golden Valley Conference teams to improve to 5-1 on the year. The Beavers racked up 14 more hits and held on despite allowing the tying run to reach base in the 9th inning. Freshman Jeff Robinson (Mira Loma) picked up his first win in relief of starter Brandon Muser (Woodcreek) who was limited to just four innings because of the flu. Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) worked 3 1/3 innings of relief to record the save. He was also 2x4 at the plate. Freshman 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) continued his hot hitting, going 3x5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI on the day. The win is the Beavers 5th in a row and third straight at home. Their 5-1 record is the best since 2002 when the Beavers, led by pitchers Manny Parra, Dallas Braden, Ryan Vaughn, Andy Willick, Quinn Monsma, and Ryan Knippschild also started 5-1. Last season the Beavers did not win their 5th game until March 3, the second game of conference play, and did not win back to back games until March 30 and April 3, the crossover round of league play. The 2004 Beavers did not win their 3rd home game until April 17, versus Diablo Valley College. The Beavers return to the ARC Thursday, February 17 to play #22 College of the Sequoias at 2:30, #21 Los Medanos on Friday, February 18 at 2:30, and #15 San Jose City on Saturday, February 19 at 1:00 p.m.

BEAVERS RACK UP 17 IN 6-3 WIN OVER SHASTA

American River College slugged out 17 hits on Friday, February 11 but only managed 6 runs versus #16 ranked Shasta College at Beaver Field. Sophomore Mike Hernandez (Woodland) picked up the win, throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Brian Bates (Mira Loma). Jason Maes (Folsom) struck out six in 3 2/3 to record his first save of the year. Bates struggled, allowing a walk and three hits to the only four batters he faced before Hernandez came on. Hernandez allowed a single to the first batter he faced, and that was the last hit that Shasta would get on the day. Offensively, the Beavers were very offensive, with CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista), 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) and RF Joe Belli (Ponderosa) each getting three hits on the day. Belli had two of the Beavers six doubles on the day, with Holtzen, Vaughn, Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble), and Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) each adding one. Thennis had two RBI’s to bring his total to 9 in five games. The Beavers improve to 4-1 and continue their home stand tomorrow versus #12 Feather River.

BEAVERS RALLY FOR 1st HOME WIN IN 2005

The Beavers made it interesting for those who braved the cold Thursday night, as they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th to defeat the 9th ranked Lassen Cougars 8-5 at Beaver Field. Freshman Jake Hower (EagleCrest CO) picked up his first collegiate victory, throwing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Beavers got on the board in the bottom of the first on a two out triple by SS Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde), which scored LF Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID) all the way from 1st. In the 3rd inning A.R.C. capitalized on a leadoff chopper by RF Benito Osuna (Lincoln) that the Lassen first baseman lost in the sun. After two groundouts and a hit batsman, Doug Thennis again came through with a big two out single to right which scored Osuna. David Martin (Casa Roble) started the game on the mound for the Beavers and was cruising along until the 5th inning when he walked two batters and gave up a single, giving way to reliever Brandon Boyd (Esparto). Boyd was able to get out of the inning with the score tied 2-2. Boyd struggled also, hitting two batters in the 6th inning and allowing a pair of hits to give Lassen a 5-2 lead. The Beavers came back in the bottom half of the 6th scoring twice, with 1B Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) hitting a run scoring double and 3B Chris Curtis (Glencoe OR) driving a ball into the left center field gap to score Vaughn. The score remained 5-4 until the bottom of the 8th when Chris Curtis led off with an infield single, followed by a Steve Erkel (Granite Bay) single to right. On the play Curtis advanced to 3rd and the throw from the Lassen right fielder was misplayed, allowing Curtis to score and tie the game. With two outs, freshman Andy Harris (River City) pinch ran for Erkel. After an infield single by Osuna and a walk by CF Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista), a wild pitch scored both Harris and Osuna, giving the Beavers a 7-5 lead. 2B Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) followed that up with a two strike double down the left field line scoring Holtzen and giving the Beavers the 8-5 victory. A.R.C. returns to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to face #16 Shasta College at Beaver Field. Freshman LHP Brian Bates (Mira Loma) will be on the mound.

A.R.C. RALLIES LATE TO DEFEAT MPC

American River College picked up their second win of the season, defeating Monterey Peninsula College 6-5 on Saturday. It was the second win in two days over the Lobos, who are now 0-5 all time versus A.R.C. The Beavers used strong pitching from sophomores Brandon Muser (Woodcreek), Brandon Boyd (Esparto) and Nick Vaughn (Oak Ridge) to hold MPC to 5 runs on 7 hits. For the third straight game the Beavers offense was outstanding, picking up 13 hits to bring their weekend total to 42. Sophomore centerfielder Garrett Holtzen (Bella Vista) led the way with three hits, an RBI single in the 8th inning to give the Beavers the lead, a double in the 2nd inning and a triple in the 4th inning. Freshmen Chris Rinaudo (Casa Roble) and Doug Thennis (Mesa Verde) each added a pair of hits, with Thennis driving in the game winner in the bottom of the 9th. Eight of the nine starters had hits for A.R.C. Nick Vaughn tied the game in the bottom of the 7th, driving in Thennis who had singled and stole second. Vaughn then entered the game in the 9th as the closer, after Boyd threw 3 innings of solid relief. With a runner on first, Vaughn walked his first batter, then allowed a single to load the bases with no outs and the Beavers ahead 5-4. After getting MPC 3rd baseman John Gage to fly out to shallow right field, All-Northern California SS David Phillips drove the first pitch he saw to deep center field where Holtzen ran it down, but a run scored to tie the game at 5. The next batter, MPC catcher Charles Howell popped up in front of the MPC dugout where catcher Steven Erkel (Granite Bay) made a nice sliding catch to keep the score at 5-5. In the bottom half of the 9th, Beavers left fielder Chris Rinaudo drew a leadoff walk, then took 2nd on a groundout by 2B Bryon McDonough (Meridian ID). Thennis followed with his game winner, a sharp single up the middle which easily scored Rinaudo. The Beavers are 2-1 and will face Lassen College at home on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. They will also face Shasta College Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Feather River College Saturday at noon, all at Beaver Field.

A.R.C. REBOUNDS TO DEFEAT MONTEREY

The Beavers came back from an early morning defeat to hand the Monterey Peninsula College Lobos their 2nd loss of the season. The Beavers bats stayed hot, knocking out 16 hits off of four MPC pitchers to gain an 11-6 victory. SUN SHINES ON BEAVER ALUMNI DAY

BEAVERS SET TO KICK OFF 2005 CAMPAIGN

Calling All Alumni!!!

The American River College Baseball team will be hosting its 2nd annual Alumni B.P. on Saturday, January 29th, which will be followed by the Blue vs. White intrasquad game, with a BBQ to follow. Admission is free to the game and the Bar-B-Que, catered by O’Connors Catering, is free to all alumni. For the general public, the cost is $35 per person. The alumni batting practice will start at 11:00 a.m. with the intra-squad game set to begin around 12:15 p.m. The Bar-B-Que will be immediately following the 6 inning game.

Last years event saw about 20 former Beaver Baseball players in attendance, as well as many parents and friends of the program.  “We are hoping first for as good weather as we had last year, but also for more alumni to come out and turn this into an annual event.  So many people had a good experience playing for Coach Higgins, that I am hoping to turn this into something even bigger, possibly an alumni game or golf tournament in the future,” says Doug Jumelet, current Head Coach and member of the 1993 team.  In case of rain, the Bar-B-Que will still be held in the gym on campus.
