BEAVERS IN THE DRAFT
Two members of the 2008 American
River College Baseball team were selected on Day 2 of the Major
League Baseball draft. Freshman left-hander Jeff Lease (Oakmont)
was selected as the first pick of the 46th round by
the Tampa Bay Rays. Lease was 3-2 with a 3.99 ERA and struck out
53 in 49 innings. Lease has signed a letter of intent to play at
Long Beach State next season.
Mark Lincoln (Casa Roble) was

Lincoln was 0-0 with a 1.46 ERA and a team leading 5 saves as he
earned the closer role for the Beavers this past season. Lincoln
had 26 strikeouts in 24 innings and allowed just 15 hits. His
two older brothers also played for the Beavers, Mike in 1994-95
and Jeff in 1998-99. Mike went on to play at the University of
Tennessee and is currently on the pitching staff of the
Cincinnati Reds. Jeff went on to play at Western Kentucky
University and played for several seasons in the Minnesota Twins
organization. Mark is the first Beaver to get drafted by the
Colorado Rockies organization.
Former Beavers Doug Thennis (Mesa
Verde) and Matt Long (Woodland) were also taken in the draft on
Friday. Thennis, a senior at Texas Tech University played at
A.R.C. in 2005 and was drafted by the Washington Nationals. He
was taken in the 27th round by the Chicago White Sox.
Matt Long finished his collegiate
career as the single season and career leader in strikeouts at
Cal State San Bernadino was drafted in the 34th round
by the Tampa Bay Rays. Long was a two way player for the Beavers
in 2005 as he and Doug Thennis helped lead the Beavers to a
Super-Regional appearance.

LEASE SIGNS WITH LONG BEACH STATE
Redshirt freshman Jeff Lease has
signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play for Long Beach

with a 3.99 ERA and struck out 53 batters in 49.2 innings this

several other former Beaver greats to sign with The Beach
including Steve Hueston and Rudy Rodriguez, who was one of the
original "Dirtbags" and led the 49ers to two College World
Series appearances in the 90’s.
"Jeff is a great example of giving a
kid a chance to play and seeing how good he can become when he
is actually on the field. He was a late bloomer and Coach
Padilla did a great job of fine tuning his mechanics and
teaching him the nuances of pitching. It will be fun to watch
Jeff as he continues to get better with the more experience he
gets on the mound. He is a great kid who really deserves this",
says head coach Doug Jumelet.

CONFERENCE
American River College lost 5-4 Tuesday at Cosumnes River
College in a non-league game as the final tune-up before BIG 8
Conference play begins on Saturday. The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in
the first inning as leadoff hitter Mike McKinney (Del Oro) scored on
a groundball to short by Bo Napoleon (Carson). CRC came back in the
bottom of the first with two runs which scored on a throwing error
by shortstop Steve Camillucci (Del Oro). The Beavers then came back
with two in the top of the 2nd inning thanks to an RBI single on a
hit & run play by Mike McKinney and a groundout to 2nd by Steve
Camillucci. The Hawks tied it back up in the bottom of the 2nd to
make the score 3-3. The Beavers would score again in the 4th after a

game at Beaver Field on Saturday, losing to Sierra College 11-7. The
game saw 17 walks and 4 hit batters and the Beavers made 4 errors.
A.R.C.’s pitching staff gave up a season high 8 walks. Although the

the air between the two local rivals. Logan Lotti led the way for
Sierra with two doubles and 4 RBI, while Ian Gray (Folsom) led the
way for the Beavers with a pair of hits, including a two run double
in the 7th inning which brought the Beavers to within one run. A.R.C.

BEAVERS TAKE DOWN PIRATES 10-8
American
River College defeated the Modesto Junior College Pirates
10-8 at Beaver Field on Thursday. It was a slug fest that
saw each team record 16 hits and each team had a defensive
miscue which cost them some runs. Freshman Left-hander
Steve Crew (Roseville) got his first collegiate start and
left the game with the Beavers ahead 7-5 but he got a
no-decision as Modesto came back to tie the game off of the
eventual winner, Tye Davis (Marysville). Andrew LeDuc (Casa
Roble) struck out the side in the 9th to earn the
save for the Beavers. On Tuesday ARC recorded 19 hits and
every starter had at least one hit. Today every Modesto
starter had at least one hit and every Beaver starter except
Mike McKinney (Del Oro) recorded a hit, though McKinney did
have an RBI. The Beavers have two more non-conference
tune-ups against BIG 8 Conference foes before starting
conference play on March 8. Saturday the Beavers will take
on Sierra College at 1:00 p.m. at Beaver Field and on
