|
february 17, 2006 |
|
ARC 62, Sacramento City 55 |
11-18 Overall |
5-7 Conference |
|
In a
fitting conclusion to a season of ups and downs, the Beavers
came within 48 seconds of completing the season, but play
was suspended when a Panther player shattered the backboard
on a breakaway dunk. The game was eventually called and,
after consulting with league officials, ARC was awarded the
win. Mike Selling led a balanced Beaver offense with 10
points and seven rebounds as 11 players scored in the
contest. Wendale Farrow added eight points, five rebounds,
and four assists while George Golden finished with seven
points. Tim Goode, Jake Kernodle, and Mike Williams each
contributed six points. |

Sierra 65, ARC 52
|
10-18 Overall |
4-7 Conference |
|
Although
the hopes were slim, there was still a playoff spot on the
line in the game with the Wolverines. The hopes were
dashed, however, when Sierra jumped out to an early lead
that it never relinquished. The key blow to ARC’s effort
was poor free throw shooting—the Beavers hit only 8 of 23
from the line, making any chance for a win difficult. Matt
Paris and Joey Shank each had 10 points to lead ARC while
Wendale Farrow contributed nine points. |

|
ARC 63, Santa Rosa 60 |
10-17 Overall |
4-6 Conference |
|
The
Beavers’ kept their playoffs hopes alive with the win over
the Bear Cubs. Joey Shank scored 15 points to lead the
offense, which again struggled to find consistency but had
10 players score in the game. Darsenio Carter added nine
points and Tim Goode had eight. Early in the second half
the Beavers went cold and watched their six-point lead turn
into an eight-point deficit. But the team regrouped and
chipped away at Santa Rosa’s lead; once the Beavers regained
the lead, they never trailed. |

Delta 55, ARC 44 |
9-17 Overall |
3-6 Conference |
|
The
Beavers’ offensive woes continued as they struggled against
the tough Mustang defense. For the second consecutive game,
ARC did not have a players score in double figures, managing
only 19 points in the first half and 25 more in the second.
Wendale Farrow led the team with nine points, with Darsenio
Carter adding eight and Mike Selling finishing with seven.
The Beavers’ defense kept the team in the game, but
top-seeded Delta controlled the tempo. |

Diablo Valley 61, ARC 46 |
9-16 Overall |

The
Beavers’ three-game win streak was snapped in the road loss
to the Vikings. DVC built a 13-point halftime lead and
pushed it to 16 early in the second half. But over a
seven-minute span, ARC went on a 16-2 run to cut the lead to
two, but the Beavers could not even the score. No ARC
players finished in double figures, as Joey Shank’s nine
points led the team. Jake Kernodle and Mike Selling each
added eight points. |

Joey Shank
hit a three-pointer with 3.5 seconds left to lift the
Beavers to their third consecutive victory. ARC had a
10-point lead with 2:47 remaining, but squandered that
margin due to the Hawks’ full court pressure. CRC tied the
game with 16 seconds left, but Shank was able to get free
for an open jumper to give the Beavers’ the game-winner.
Shank ended with 19 points while Mike Selling added 12.
Darsenio Carter, Jake Kernodle, and Wendale Farrow each
contributed eight points. As a team, ARC hit all 14 free
throws attempted in the game. |

ARC 80, Sacramento City 62 |

The Beavers
put together another strong offensive performance as they
ran past the Panthers for their second Big 7 win. Four
players finished in double figures for ARC. Joey Shank led
with 21 points while Mike Selling added 15, Darsenio Carter
13, and Mike Williams a season-high 10. ARC completed the
first round of Big 7 play with back-to-back wins, putting
them in a four-way tie for third place. |

|
ARC 74, Sierra 62 |
7-15
Overall |
1-4 Conference |
|
The Beavers
picked up their first Big 7 win with a solid performance
against the Wolverines. ARC jumped out to an early
double-digit lead and held it until Sierra cut it to nine
with just under four minutes to play. The Beavers kept
their composure and broke an eight-game losing streak.
Three players finished in double figures for ARC, led by
Joey Shank’s season-high 25 points. Shank hit five three
pointers on seven attempts, making him 12 of 17 over a
two-game stretch. Post players Mike Selling and Jake
Kernodle each added 10 points. Wendale Farrow led the team
with six assists.

Santa Rosa 58, ARC 54
|
6-15 Overall |

|
Joey Shank
went for 21 points by connecting on seven three pointers,
but the Beavers could not muster enough offense to overcome
the Bear Cubs on the road. ARC played some outstanding
defense in the first half to take a two-point advantage into
the intermission. But in the second half a rash of
turnovers and cold shooting allowed Santa Rosa to come back
for the narrow win. Mike Selling finished with eight points
and five rebounds. |

|
Delta 69, ARC 50 |
6-14 Overall |

|
On the road
against the highly-ranked Mustangs, the Beavers could not
overcome a sluggish first half. Matt Paris and Darsenio
Carter each had 10 points for ARC. Wendale Farrow added six
points and six rebounds. ARC was able to cut Delta’s
15-point advantage to eight six minutes into the second
half, but the Mustangs—as good teams do—hit clutch shot
after clutch shot to pull away from the Beavers. |

In the
Beavers’ second Big 7 contest, they again lacked offense in
the first half, made a strong comeback in the second, and
forced not one but two overtime periods before falling to
the Vikings. ARC put up only 18 points in the first 20
minutes, but held DVC to just 22 in the second half and
forced an overtime when George Golden nailed a 3-pointer
with 4 seconds left in regulation. The first overtime
period was a 10-10 tie, thanks in part to Wendale Farrow’s
four consecutive points near the end of the 5-minute
period. Joey Shank led ARC with 21 points, and Darsenio
Carter contributed 18 points and six rebounds. Mike Selling
finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. |

The Beavers
let a 4-point lead slip away in the final minutes of
regulation as the Hawks won in overtime. ARC was down 12 at
the half but came back strong to take a brief lead, but then
went scoreless the first three minutes of overtime. Three
players finished in double figures to lead the second-half
charge: Mike Selling led with 11 points, and George Golden
and Joey Shank each added 10. Selling also had eight
rebounds. |

For the
second consecutive day, the Beavers managed only 20 points
in the first half, primarily due to cold shooting rather
than the Owls’ defense. The second half warmed up some as
ARC took a 4-point lead with under eight minutes to play,
but Foothill regained its outside touch and totaled 10 three
pointers, eight in the second half, to come away with the
win. George Golden led the scoring with 13, and John Wynne
added 10 as the only Beavers in double figures. Mike
Selling led the team with seven rebounds. |

The Golden
Eagles, No. 1 in the North and No. 2 in the state, held the
Beavers to just 20 points in the first half en route to the
win. ARC rallied in the second half to cut the lead to 15
and more than 12 minutes remaining, but Siskiyous answered
with its own run to control the contest. Guard George
Golden led the second-half charge with 17 of his 21 points
in the second half, including 3-of-5 shooting beyond the
three-point line. Post Jake Kernodle finished with 14
points and 11 rebounds. |

The Beavers
jumped to a quick 4-0 lead and looked like they might take
control of the contest, but they went cold and finished the
first half with only 14 points. Because of some solid
defense, ARC was still in game throughout until the shots
just would not fall in the final minutes. Tim Goode was the
only player in double figures, dropping 11 points on the
Bear Cubs. Darsenio Carter finished with eight points and
seven rebounds. |

ARC 71, Feather River 65 |

The Beavers
spotted the Golden Eagles a huge lead in a matter of minutes
when Feather River came out on fire and hit five of six
three pointers in the first three minutes to build a 19-2
cushion. But from that point on, it was all ARC as the
Beavers fought back into the game, cutting the deficit to
just four at the half, and dominated the second half. Joey
Shank and Mike Selling each totaled 18 points and Darsenio
Carter added 16 to lead the offense. Selling also finished
with 11 rebounds and three assists. |

Playing
against the team that at the time was ranked No. 1 in the
state, the Beavers stepped up the intensity and efficiency
to make the game closer than the score might indicate. A
Joey Shank three cut the lead to six with four minutes
remaining, but ARC was unable to capitalize on the next few
possessions. Shank finished with 19 points—hitting 5-of-8
treys—Tim Goode chipped in 12, and Mike Selling added 10. |

ARC. Tim Goode and Darsenio Carter each collected six
rebounds to lead the team. |

the same as Shasta got key offensive rebounds in the final
minutes to salvage another come-from-behind win. Tim Goode
and Wendale Farrow each finished with 15 points, and Joey
Shank added 13, but turnovers again troubled ARC down the
stretch. Goode led the team with seven rebounds. |

Selling and Jake Kernodle contributed 16 and 13 each.
Wendale Farrow led the rebounding with nine. |

Because of
a late drop from the tournament, the Shasta Alumni played
the last two rounds of the tourney. Fielding 10 former
Knights, all of whom went on and played at four-year
schools, the alumni squad proved to be a great test for the
young ARC team. Despite falling behind by six points
with five minutes to play, the Beavers rallied to take the
lead and hold off the more experienced Shasta team and win
the Consolation title. Joey Shank led ARC with 20
points, and three others finished with double digits:
Darsenio Carter had 16 and Tim Goode and Jake Kernodle each

not enough to overcome a talented Viking squad. After
a shaky start, ARC kept the game close with hot-shooting
DVC. Joey Shank was the only Beaver to hit double
figures, finishing with 11. Mike Selling had eight

In the

each added six. |
|
Season Preview |
|
While the
future looks bright for the Beavers as they head into the
season opener in the Santa Rosa Junior College Jamboree,
there are several key questions that need to be answered
before any predictions can come true. The biggest
questions are how the freshman-laden squad will respond to
college-level competition and how long it will take 14 new
players to mesh into one unit. |
| |
|
ARC has 12
first year players and two sophomores on the roster, and
neither of the sophomores played at ARC his freshman season.
Tim Goode (Encina) transferred from Gavilan College and Mike
Williams (Foothill) returned from Reedley College. The
team, according to head coach Mark Giorgi, has blended
together nicely during conditioning, and he anticipates that
the unity will grow as the team goes through a tough
preseason schedule. |
| |
|
In January,
the Beavers open league play in the new Big 7 Conference,
which is loaded with talented teams from top to bottom.
Joining the new conference are perennial powers Diablo
Valley and Santa Rosa, both of which finished in the top 10
in the state last year. Delta, the defending Bay
Valley Conference champion, made it to the Final Four last
season and should be reloaded for this year. Cosumnes
River, Sierra, and Sacramento City have improved, leaving
ARC in the midst of a very competitive conference. |
| |
|
Playing
along side veterans Goode and Williams, the key perimeter
players for the Beavers will be freshman Darsenio Carter
(Natomas), Wendale Farrow (Mira Loma), George Golden
(Christian Brothers), Justin Leggins (Maria Carrillo), Jerek
Jospeh (McClatchy), Matt Paris (Rocklin), Joey Shank
(Folsom), and John Wynne (Kennedy). The post positions
will be handled by Eric Hamerton (Ponderosa), Jake Kernodle
(Oak Ridge), Pace Samuels (Piner), and Mike Selling
(Folsom). |
