2007 Men's Cross Country Team

Congratulations to ARC Cross Country Coach Rick Anderson.  Before the NorCal meet, which his team dominated, Anderson was named the NorCal Coach of the Year, the fourth time he has honored with the award in his 12 years at the school.

State Championship TOURNAMENT
november 17, 2007

The Beavers ran to a fourth-place finish at Woodward Park in Fresno, the top finisher among the Northern California schools.  Nelson Mwangi turned in the fastest time for the Beavers, clocking a 20:48 over the 4-mile course to finish 11th in a field of 199 runners.  All of ARC’s runners finished in the top 80:  Jason Engler was 17th with a time of 21:04, Anthony Costales was 33rd with a 21:18 run, Bruce Buckle finished 57th with a 21:46, Gus Gibbs was right behind in 60th place at 21:48, Dan Labrador was 75th at 21:59, and Erik Gregory was 80th at 22:01.


Northern California Championship
november 3, 2007

Nelson Mwangi got passed by Hartnell’s Enrique Lopez with 20 yards to go at Beale’s Point in Folsom, and the ARC sophomore had to settle for second place in the North, but the team crushed the competition en route to another team title.  ARC finished with 35 points, more than lapping second-place Fresno City’s 71.  Lopez ran a 20:38 pace over the 4-mile course, edging Mwangi by four seconds with his closing sprint.  The Beavers’ Gus Gibbs was fourth with a 20:55 mark, Jason Engler came in right behind at 20:56, and Dan Labrador was eighth with a 21:05 time, putting four Beavers in the top eight in a field of over 100 runners.  Other top finishers for ARC were Erik Gregory (17th with a time of 21:33), Anthony Costales (20th, 21:39), and Bruce Buckle (29th, 22:03).


Big 8 Conference Championship

The Beavers ran past the competition at Sierra College to win their third consecutive conference title.  ARC runners recorded four of the top five times, and seven finished in the top 11 as the Beavers lapped the field, beating second-place Diablo Valley by 38 points.  Nelson Mwangi turned in the best time on the 4-mile course, sneaking in ahead of a near-photo finish with a 22:55 mark.  Mwangi crossed five seconds ahead of DVC’s Alex Davies, who edged ARC’s Gus Gibbs by a second.  Beavers Dan Labrador (23:48) and Anthony Costales (23:53) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.  Jason Engler (eighth place in 24:12), Bruce Buckle (10th in 24:19), and Aaron Dilts (11th in 24:28) rounded out the top 11 finishers.  ARC runners recorded 11 of the top 16 in the meet.  Tom Witt (12th, 24:37), Erik Gregory (13th, 24:42), Eli Tuisku (14th, 24:42), and Chris Heylin (16th, 25:07) helped the Beavers dominate the event.


Santa Clara Bronco Invitational/Gary Judd Invitational
october 13, 2007

The Beavers split their squad on Saturday, sending five runners to Santa Clara and the rest of the team to Rocklin.  The ARC contingent at the Bronco Invitational placed 11th out of 17 Division I and II programs, and the runners competing in Rocklin won the 8-team community college meet.  In Santa Clara, Nelson Mwangi ran a 25:28 to finish in 25th place among four-year schools.  Anthony Costales was 41st with a 25:44 mark, Dan Labrador turned in a 26:13 to place 61st, Erik Gregory clocked a 26:47 to finish 101st, and Gus Gibbs finished 110th in the field with a 27:08 time.  In Rocklin, the Beavers won the meet held on the 4.25 mile course.  Jason Engler came in first with a 23:07 time, more than 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.  Other top finishers for ARC included Eli Tuisku (24:23), Chris Heylin (24:42), Aaron Dilts (24:43), Cale Crawford (24:54), Ryan Lawrence (25:13), and David Oien (26:30).


Sacramento Cowtown 5K
october 7, 2007
After a season of nothing but 4 mile races, the Beavers took part in Sunday’s road race. ARC continued its racing dominance, taking 10 of the first 11 places, with Anthony Costales winning (out of the 714 runners) the 3.1 mile event in a blistering 15:33 (4:59 pace per mile). Second place Gus Gibbs finished in 15:39. Nelson Mwangi was 4th in 16:01, Dan Labrador 5th (16:23), Erik Gregory 6th (16:26), Eli Tuisku 7th (16:31), Bruce Buckle 8th (16:37), Jason Engler 9th (16:49), Tom Witt 10th (16:55) and Ryan Lawrence 11th in 17:01.
This week the Beavers split their team with the top five runners traveling to Santa Clara to take on 17 Division I and II universities, while the rest of the team will travel to Sierra College to take on Northern California community colleges in the Gary Judd Invitational.

Lou Vasquez Invitational

september 27, 2007

One week after a dominating victory in Southern California, the Beavers ran away with another team title at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. ARC, after a brutal training week and a 7-mile morning run on race day, took three of the first four places and had its top five runners in the top 11 of the 157-man field. For the first time in his running career, Gus Gibbs won a large invitational, just 2 seconds ahead second-place Nelson Mwangi and 8 seconds ahead of fourth-place Dan Labrador. The top seven ARC runners times on the 4.03 mile course were:  Gibbs (20:34), Mwangi (20:36), Labrador (20:42), Anthony Costales (8th place in 20:57), Nathan Spangler (11th, 21:05), Erik Gregory (23rd, 21:38), and Bruce Buckle (25th, 21:40).

Golden West Invitational

september 22, 2007

Running on a Central Park course in Huntington Beach shortened by 400 meters due to heavy rain, the Beavers cruised to another easy victory.  Sophomores Nelson Mwangi and Gus Gibbs finished one-two, with times of 19:28 and 19:37, respectively.  ARC ran past second-place Mt. San Antonio, which was competing without three of its top runners.  Other top finishers for the Beavers were Dan Labrador (20:03), Nathan Spangler (20:06), and Erik Gregory (20:10).

Fresno City College Invitational

september 15, 2007

The Beavers, ranked No. 1 in the NorCal and fifth in the state, finished third in Fresno, where 30 of the top programs around the state competed.  ARC’s Nelson Mwangi finished 6th overall with a time of 20:52 as ARC placed its top five runners in the top 40 of the 268-runner field.  Gus Gibbs was 10th at 21:12, Anthony Costales came in 15th at 21:28.  Other top finishers for the Beavers were Erik Gregory (21:42) and Dan Labrader (21:53).

Beaver Invitational

september 8, 2007

The Beavers won the first invitational of the year beating second-place Fresno City by a score of 32-57.  Host ARC easily won the meet, which featured all of top Northern California schools, by placing five runners in the top 10:  Nelson Mwangi (21:10), Gus Gibbs (21:39), Anthony Costales (21:39), Dan Labrador (22:01), and Erik Gregory (22:04).
