NorCal Championships

The Beavers finished second in the meet at Sacramento City, despite some record-setting individual performances.  Mark Paige set two ARC records in the sprints, and the 4x100m relay team set a new standard.  Paige took second in the 200m, clocking a 20.84—which beat the old mark by more than a second.  Paige also broke his own mark in the 100m, sprinting to a 10.52—bettering his 10.70 set earlier this season.  Jawan Jackson, Marcus Shepard, Aaron Rios, and Paige teamed up to set the new mark in the 4x100 with a 41.23 effort.  Rios also came in second in the 800m with a time of 1:53.25.  Shepard jumped to a second-place spot in the long jump, clearing 22’ 9.75” and then placed eighth in the 400m (49.05).  Matt Lopez also had an outstanding NorCal meet, winning the hammer with a throw of 164’ 4”, placing third in the shot put (54’ 1.5”), and fifth in the discus (151’ 10”).  In other field events, Matt Phillips finished second in the javelin, going 183’ 9”.  The Beavers also scored big in the distance events, led by Jason Prado, who finished second in the 10K (32:52.85), second in the 3K steeple (10:17.33), and eighth in the 5K (16:11.62).  Cristian Morinico also had a good meet, running to a second in the 5K (15:43.94) and third in the 10K (33:03.37).  Five other ARC distance runners added points to the team total:  Paul Magaletti was fifth in the 3K steeple (10:19.82) and seventh in the 5K (16:10.66), Ken Parnow was sixth in the 1500m (4:05.60), Jake Boeger finished eighth in the 10K (34:40.71), and, in the 3K steeple, Jason Engler finished sixth (10:20.29).  Scott Tetreault totaled 5,153 points to place fifth in the decathlon.

NorCal Trials 

The Beavers finished the trials with several strong performances and find themselves on top of the team standings with a six-point lead heading into this weekend’s NorCal Championships.  Two athletes won their respective events in the trials to lead a list of Beavers who have the opportunity to garner a NorCal title.  Marcus Shepard won the long jump with a 22’ 8” mark, and Matt Lopez won the hammer with a 157’ 1” throw.  Lopez also finished second in the shot put (54’) and discus (159’ 5”).  In the javelin, Matt Phillips placed second with a 167’ 5” effort.  In the 10K, four runners placed in the top ten, led by Jason Prado’s second-place finish at 32:52.85, followed closely by Cristian Morinico at 33:03.37.  In the sprints, Mark Paige took second in the 200m with a 21.23, just .02 off the top mark, and third in the 100m with a 10.63 time.  In the 800m, Aaron Rios came in second with a time of 1:56.23.  In the relays, the 4x400m team finished second with a 3:17.45 time, and a 41.61 in the 4x100m.

Big 7 Conference Meet

The Beavers took second despite crowning eight individual and relay champions, more than any other school in the conference meet, held at Merritt College in Oakland.  Sacramento City was able to win the team title thanks due its depth in each event.  “Either Sac City or ARC won every event, and we had more champions than anyone, but we still didn’t have enough to pass them up,” said Coach Rick Anderson.  Mark Paige was the only triple winner in the meet, sprinting to titles in both the 100m and 200m, and anchoring the record-setting 4x100m relay team.  Paige bettered his school record in the 100m with a time of 10.69, and then won the 200m with a 21.44 effort.  The winning relay team ran to a new ARC mark in the 4x100m with a 41.30 clocking, competing with Jawan Jackson, Marcus Shepard, Aaron Rios, and Paige.  Rios also garnered another title by winning the 800m in 1:53.29.  Cristian Morinico won the 10,000m with a 34:09.06 run, and Jason Prado became the steeplechase champion with a 9:53.89 performance.  In the field events, Matt Lopez won the hammer with a 174’ 6” throw, and Matt Phillips took the javelin with a 169’ 6” toss.

Viking Invitational 

The Beavers received some outstanding individual efforts from several athletes, including four first place and four second place finishes.  As he has done most of the season, Matt Lopez dominated the throwing events, taking first in the discus (153’ 2”) and the shot put (53’ 10.75”) and second in the hammer (158’ 5”).  In other field events, Matt Phillips took second in the javelin with a toss of 174’ 6” and Scott Tetreault cleared 15’ to finish third in the pole vault.  Leading the track events was Mark Paige’s win in the 200m, sprinting to a time of 21.14.  Another first-place effort came from Jason Prado, who won the 3000m steeple with an impressive 9:48.65, 48 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.  Eric Johnson finished sixth in the same event with a time of 10:46.80.  Ken Parnow ran to a second-place finish in the 1500m with his 4:05.28, and Cristian Morinico came in seventh with a 4:09.57 mark.  In the 5000m, the Beavers took fourth, fifth, and sixth as Jason Engler (15:54.87), Jason Prado (15:58.49), and Paul Magaletti (16:00.87) pushed each other across the finish line.  In the relays, ARC took second in the 4x400 with a 3:18.83 time and third in the 4x100 with a 41.99 mark.

Ed Adams Invitational    

Competing against a big field in Salinas, ARC’s highlight of the meet came in the 5000m as Cristian Morinico won the event with a 15:38.21 mark.  In the same race, Jason Prado finished sixth with a 15:38.49 mark and Paul Magaletti was eighth at 16:00.87.  In the 100m, Alex Isley sprinted to an 11.42 time which earned him second in the event; Isley also ran a 59.46 in the 400m hurdles for a fifth-place finish.  In the 200m, Marcus Shepard placed third with a 22.08 mark and then took sixth in the long jump at 21’ 5.25”.  In other field events, Matt Lopez put the shot 50’ 4.25” for second in the event, took another second with a 158’ 5” throw in the hammer competition, and finished third in the discus with a 149’ 8” effort.

Chabot Relays  

The Beavers continue to dominate not only the Big 7 schools, but also teams throughout Northern California.  ARC posted 13 new personal best marks in Hayward.  In the 5K alone, three runners put up season-best times, led by Lindsey Barlow’s 19:22, who ran the race for the first time in her career.  Barlow’s time is the top mark in the league and fourth fastest in the NorCals.  Lynn Tracy sliced 38 seconds off her best time, finishing with a 20:29; she was followed by Kelley Rooney, who was clocked in 21:01.  Two more best marks came in the shot put.  Lindy Capps moved up to No. 7 on the all time ARC list with a 36’ 11½ ” effort.  Sprinter and heptathlete Elsa Barthson put the shot 27’ 10”.  Crystina Osborne led the Beavers in the hammer with a new best mark of 117’ 8½”; she also threw the javelin 96’ 11” and another ARC heptathlete, Sherrie Rouse, went 87’ 9”.  Brittany Peterson, the school record holder in the pole vault, showed her versatility by hitting the provisional mark in the triple jump, 29’ 1”, in her first attempt in the event.

UC Davis Aggie Open 

Running in a meet that featured 2- and 4-year schools, the Beavers held their own against the competition.  In the 5000m, Jason Prado won the “B” race with a 16:01.30 time, Paul Magaletti came in second with a 16:20.66 effort, Vince Bardini was fifth at 16:32.46, and Eric Johnson finished seventh with a 17:09.12 mark.  Mark Paige ran to a third place finish with a 10.84 clocking in the 100m.  In field events, Matt Lopez and Drew Pena distinguished themselves in the hammer and discus.  In the former event, Lopez was fifth with his 130’ 4” throw, and Pena finished eighth at 126’ 4”.  In the latter, Lopez’s 153’ 2” toss in the discus garnered him fourth place, and Pena was eighth with a 130’ 8” effort.

Beaver Relays

ARC hosted the annual Beaver Relays, bringing in some of the top programs throughout the state.  Some outstanding individual performances were turned in by the men—most notably Matt Lopez in the shot put and Mark Paige in the 100m dash.  Lopez put the shot 49’ 8” to win the event; he also placed fourth in the hammer and ninth in the discus.  Paige won the 100m with a time of 10.97, the only mark under 11 seconds in the meet.  Jawan Jackson placed third with an 11.39 clocking.  Matt Phillips took second overall in the javelin with a 173’ 5” effort.  Teammate Scott Tetreault finished fifth with a 151’ 10” throw—the first time he has ever thrown the javelin in competition.  Tetreault was busy on Saturday, competing in the high jump, long jump, pole vault, and shot put in addition to the discus.  Marcus Shepard soared to a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 21’ 10.25”.  Eric Johnson came in second in the 10K with a time of 36:43.28.

Rotational Meet  

The Beavers hosted four other schools in the one-day event, and only Butte stayed within striking distance as the men’s team outscored the Roadrunners 285-180.  Matt Lopez led the onslaught by winning three throwing events, heaving the discus 149’ 8”, the shot put 47’ 1”, and the hammer 152’ 9”.  In other field events, Scott Tetreault cleared 14’ 0” in the pole vault, Marcus Shepard leapt 22’ 2” to win the long jump, and Matt Phillips had the top throw in the javelin at 174’ 6”.  On the track, ARC’s Aaron Rios sprinted to a first place time of 49.68 in the 400m dash, Alex Isley took the 110m hurdles in 19.79, and the 4x400m relay team won with a 3:26.07 mark.  Jason Prado won the 3,000m steeplechase with time of 10:17.80.

NorCal 6-Way Rotational at Chabot  

The Beavers edged out Chabot in the five-team meet using their speed, endurance, and strength to pace the field.  In the sprint events, Jawan Jackson won the 100m and 200m races, putting up times of 11.36 and 23.22, respectively.  Jeremy Lipp ran the 400m in 53.57 to win the event.  In the hurdles, Alex Isley won the 110m race with a 21.43 effort, and then placed second with a 1:04.69 time in the 400m intermediates.  In the 800m, Aaron Rios (2:01.09) and Aaron Dilts (2:06.23) took first and second.  In the 4x400m relay, ARC topped the field with a 3:37.96.  The Beavers distance runners dominated the field, picking up where they left off in cross country.  Ken Parnow won both the 1,500m and the 5,000m, clocking times of 4:19.07 and 16:24.31, respectively.  Other top finishers in the 1,500m were Paul Magaletti (4:26.30), Jason Prado (4:27.89), Vince Bardini (4:33.58), Graeme Sadler (4:39.90), and Jay Bessette (5:40.97).  In the 5,000m, Parnow was followed by Prado (16:25.90), Bardini (16:57.25), Magaletti (16:58.51), and Sadler (17:39.23).  In the field events, ARC’s Genesis Hampton tied San Mateo’s Andrew Van Straaten in the long jump, both going 19’ 7”.  In the hammer, Matt Lopez had the best throw of 134’ 5.5”.
