SOFTBALL SUMMARIES-2007

april 24, 2007
Diablo Valley 4, ARC 0 9-27 Overall 0-15 Conference

Despite out hitting the Vikings, the Beavers closed the season with a shout out.  Valerie Robinson pounded out two singles and Erin Hayes smacked a double, but ARC could not bunch any of its eight hits together to produce a run.

Diablo Valley 11, ARC 8   9-26 Overall 0-14 Conference

The Beavers generated plenty of offense but gave up six unearned runs in the loss to the Vikings.  ARC collected nine singles and worked for three walks en route to the eight-run outing, but three defensive errors opened up the door for a seven-run 6th inning for DVC.  Jackie Yarak and Nicole Dawson each had two hits, and Dawson joined Valerie Slauson with two runs batted in.

Sacramento City 8, ARC 0 9-25 Overall 0-13 Conference

The Beavers were shut out a second time by the Panthers, who are ranked 4th in the state.  In the second game, Martha Ballas was the only Beaver to reach base, on an error, but she was eliminated by a double play.

Sacramento City 11, ARC 0 9-24 Overall  0-12 Conference
The hitting woes continued for the Beavers as the team managed only one hit in two games against the Panthers.  Jackie Yarak accounted for the lone ARC hit, a single in the 4th inning.

april 16, 2007
Sierra 7, ARC 3 9-23 Overall 0-11 Conference

The Wolverines struck early in the second game, scoring three runs in the 2nd inning, then single runs in each of the next four innings. The Beavers continued to struggle at the plate until the 5th inning. Following a walk and an error, Jackie Yarak delivered a two-run single. Yarak then scored on another Sierra error. Merchant, who was 2 for 3 in the second game, singled to open the 7th. She later scored on an error, but the Beavers were unable to finish the comeback.

Sierra 6, ARC 1 9-22 Overall  0-10 Conference

The Beavers were unable to solve the pitching of the Wolverines, despite some solid pitching of their own.  Ashley Merchant again threw well for ARC, but her throwing error in the 4th inning led to four Sierra runs. The Beavers were hitless until the 5th inning when Valerie Robinson singled to right field. Following a walk, Kim Carpenter singled, and Merchant drew a bases loaded walk to score the only run for ARC. Valerie Slauson doubled in the 7th, but was stranded at second base.

april 7, 2007
Santa Rosa 8, ARC 7 9-21 Overall  0-9 Conference

In the second game of the double header, the Beavers took a 2-0 lead on a Bear Cubs error in the first and an RBI double by Jennifer Munos in the 3rd. However, Santa Rosa took advantage of an ARC error in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game, then wrapped four hits around another error to take a four-run lead after four innings.  The Beavers did not quit. In the 6th, Valerie Slauson hit a solo home run and a fly ball by Martha Ballas scored another run. In the 7th, Nicole Dawson and Munos led off with singles and scored on a Valerie Slauson single and a Kim Carpenter double to send the game into extra innings. Ballas opened the 8th with a single and scored on another Munos single, who finished the game 4-for-5.  Carpenter also collected four hits in the contest.  The Bear Cubs scored in the 8th to force one more inning, and tallied the game-winner on a close play at the plate in the bottom half of the 9th.

Santa Rosa 5, ARC 4 9-20 Overall 0-8 Conference

The season of frustration continued for American River as the Beavers lost two one-run games against the Bear Cubs. The two close losses run the season’s total to five one-run losses in Big 7 Conference play, not to mention three extra-inning losses. ARC scored twice in the 1st inning when Martha Ballas and Samantha Tervo singled, followed by a Nicole Dawson sacrifice fly, and a double by Jennifer Munos. Another Ballas single and a bunt by Dawson that was misplayed opened the door for two more runs in the 3rd inning. Munos drove in one with a sacrifice fly and Ashley Merchant plated the other run with a single.  Unfortunately, a two-run home run by the Bear Cub's Janell Arnold and a Beaver error allowed Santa Rosa to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd. Two more errors by the usually sure handed ARC infield allowed Santa Rosa to score what proved to be the winning run in the 4th. Ballas finished with three hits, and Tervo and Kim Carpenter each had two.

Delta 5, ARC 2 9-19 Overall 0-7 Conference

In the second game of the afternoon, the Beavers got only six hits and could produce only two runs as they came up short against the Mustangs.  Ashley Merchant and Erin Hayes combined to allow 10 hits but only three earned runs as two key ARC errors gave Delta the cushion in the win.

Delta 6, ARC 5 9-18 Overall 0-6 Conference

The Beavers pounded out 11 hits against the Mustangs, but they were edged in the Big 7 contest in Stockton.  Valerie Robinson finished with three singles and two runs batted in, and Sam Tervo and Nicole Dawson each added two hits, but it was not enough as two unearned runs handed Ashley Merchant the loss.

WOLVERINE CLASSIC-March 31-APRIL 1
april 1, 2007
ARC 3, Fresno City 2 9-17 Overall  0-5 Conference

In the tournament finale against the Rams, Merchant only allowed one hit, and her 7th inning single drove in the winning run. Valerie Slauson drove in two runs with a single in the 4th and saved the game in the bottom of the 7th with a running catch in right field and then doubling off a Fresno runner to end the game. Martha Ballas had two hits for the Beavers.

Delta 9, ARC 4 8-17 Overall 0-5 Conference

Against the Mustangs, the Beavers' pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, issuing six walks in five innings, and all six of the Delta runners scored. A two-run single by Valerie Robinson in the third inning gave ARC a 4-2 lead, but the walks and three errors aided Delta's comeback.

march 31, 2007
ARC 2, Butte 0 8-16 Overall 0-5 Conference

In the win against the Roadrunners, Valerie Slauson hit a two run double in the second inning and Ashley Merchant scattered seven hits in pitching the shutout. Merchant also had two hits, as did Sam Tervo.

Siskiyous 14, ARC 1 7-16 Overall 0-5 Conference

The Beavers opened the 25th annual tournament at Sierra by losing to the Eagles, the state’s top-ranked team.  Siskiyous, which was 5-0 in the tournament and is now 32-1 overall, showed why it is at the top of the rankings in California, pounding out 11 hits, including two triples and two home runs in downing the Beavers.  Jackie Yarak hit a double and scored the only run for ARC.

march 27, 2007
Diablo Valley 11, ARC 7   7-15 Overall  0-5 Conference

It was a story of the good, the bad, and the ugly when the Vikings downed the host Beavers 11-7 in eight innings.  The ugly was the errors and mental mistakes that allowed DVC to take a 7-0 lead after four innings. The good was the ARC rally that followed. The Beavers scored five runs in the 5th inning, keyed by Nicole Dawson's 2-run double, then forced an extra inning with two more runs in the 7th. The bad was the Beavers' missed opportunities. They left nine runners on base and had several base running mistakes.  Dawson, Jackie Yarak, and Ashley Merchant each had two hits and Merchant's sacrifice fly in the 7th inning tied the game. Dawson and Kim Carpenter drove in two runs each.

march 20, 2007
Sacramento City 5, ARC 0 7-14 Overall 0-4 Conference

Erin Hayes and Ashley Merchant split the pitching duties against the Panthers and allowed only six hits, but a stagnant offense could not muster any runs in the Big 7 loss.  ARC finished with only five hits, one each from Jacqueliine Yarak, Martha Ballas, Valerie Robinson, Jennifer Munos, and Valerie Slauson.

BASH at BUCHANAN-March 17 and 18
march 18, 2007
Diablo Valley 7, ARC 4  7-13 Overall  0-3 Conference

In a non-league game with the Vikings, the Beavers closed out the two-day tournament with a tough loss.  DVC put up three runs in the bottom of the 6th to earn the win over Ashley Merchant, who had pitched a strong game to that point.  Martha Ballas and Valerie Robinson each had two hits to lead the offense, but the Beavers could not generate enough runs to support Merchant.

march 17, 2007
ARC 11, West Hills 2 7-12 Overall 0-3 Conference

The Beavers erupted for 16 hits en route to the win over the Falcons.  Ashley Merchant turned in an outstanding pitching performance, allowing only two unearned runs on four hits.  ARC scored all its runs in the first three innings as the bats came to life.  Martha Ballas and Nicole Dawson each had three hits to pace the onslaught.  Jacqueline Yarak, Jennifer Munos, Valerie Robinson, and Samantha Tervo each finished with a pair of hits, and Tervo drove home four runs.

Cuesta 5, ARC 2   6-12 Overall 0-3 Conference

Behind a strong pitching performance from Erin Hayes, the Beavers played the Cougars even until the final frame.  ARC and Cuesta each scored a run in its first at bat, but the Cougars picked up four runs in their half of the 6th, and the Beavers could answer with only one in the bottom half of the inning.  Nicole Dawson had two hits, including a double, to lead the offense.

Long Beach 4, ARC 1  6-11 Overall 0-3 Conference

The Beavers opened the two-day bash with a tough loss to the Vikings.  The ARC offense produced only four hits, one each by Jacqueline Yarak, Martha Ballas, Samantha Tervo, and Kimberly Carpenter, but could plate only one run.

march 15, 2007
Sierra 4, ARC 1 6-10 Overall  0-3 Conference

The Beavers received a good pitching performance from Ashley Merchant but not enough runs as they fell to the Wolverines.  ARC could muster only four hits in the game, the key one being an RBI single by Valerie Robinson.   Merchant allowed only two earned runs in her six innings of work.

march 8, 2007
Santa Rosa 4, ARC 3   6-9 Overall 0-2 Conference

The Beavers got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning, but could not get another run across through the eight-inning loss to the Bear Cubs.  ARC put together three hits and two Santa Rosa errors to plate three runs in the 3rd, but the Beavers were blanked the rest of the game despite putting five more runners in scoring position.  Erin Hayes pitched well for ARC but tired in the 6th when the Bear Cubs rallied to tie the game; Ashley Merchant took the loss in relief.  Samantha Tervo and Valerie Robinson each had two hits to lead the offense.  ARC outfielders Jackie Yarak, Nicole Dawson, and Valerie Slauson continued their stellar play, recording nine of the game’s 24 outs.

march 6, 2007
Delta 2, ARC 1 6-8 Overall 0-1 Conference

The Beavers dropped their Big 7 opener against the Mustangs despite solid defense and plenty of base runners.  ARC put eight players into scoring position, but only Nicole Dawson’s 3rd-inning double brought home a run.  Jennifer Munos had two hits in three at bats.  Defensively, the outfield had a big day.  Catches by center fielder Dawson and right fielder Valerie Slauson led to double plays; Slauson’s ended a bases-loaded threat in the top of the 7th.  Unfortunately, an error in the first inning opened the door for the Mustangs, leading to Delta’s first run; the game-winning run came in the 6th on a very close play at the plate off a strong throw from leftfielder Jackie Yarak.

february 23, 2007
ARC 12, Los Angeles Valley 1 6-7 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers earned a split by pounding out 13 hits en route to a 12-run win over the Monarchs.  Jacqueline Yarak again led the offense with three hits, making her 7-for-8 on the day, and drove in another two runs.  Nicole Dawson had three hits in three at bats, Ashley Merchant, the winning pitcher, helped her own cause with two hits and two RBI, and Amber Lawhead doubled home two runs.

Los Angeles Valley 8, ARC 3  5-7 Overall  0-0 Conference

The Monarchs put up seven runs in the third to top the Beavers.  ARC out hit LA Valley, 11-9, led by a perfect 4-for-4 performance by Jacqueline Yarak.  Yarak drove in two of the Beavers’ three runs in the second inning, and Jennifer Munos added two hits.

february 17, 2007
Siskiyous 6, ARC 0   5-6 Overall 0-0 Conference

In the second game of the day at Yuba, the Beavers took on the Golden Eagles and, despite more base runners, could not produce any runs.  Nicole Dawson led ARC’s offense with a 2-for-3 afternoon, but a four-run Siskiyous 6th sealed it for the Golden Eagles.

Yuba 7, ARC 2 5-5 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers gave up five runs in the first two innings, digging a hole from which they could not recover as they fell to the 49ers.  Valerie Slauson had two hits in three at bats, but ARC could not generate enough offense to overcome the shaky start.

february 16, 2007
ARC 6, Lassen 5 5-4 Overall  0-0 Conference

In the second game with the Cougars, the Beavers fell behind quickly, surrendering five runs in the 1st.  But ARC roared back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and three more in third to gain the advantage.  Amber Lawhead, who relieved Ashley Merchant in the 1st, earned the win by shutting out the Cougars the final six innings.  ARC’s Jennifer Munos collected two hits, including a double, to lead the offense.

Lassen 3, ARC 2  4-4 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers faced one of the top pitchers in the North, the Cougars’ Yin Zhou, but could not hold on to an early lead.  ARC jumped out to a two-run lead in the 1st, and Ashley Merchant rose to the occasion and shut out Lassen for the first three innings.  The Cougars tied the game in the fourth and got the go-ahead run in the 6th.

february 13, 2007
ARC 6, Solano 5 4-3 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers scored in the bottom of the 9th to pull off the sweep of the Falcons.  Martha Ballas hit a one-out double and then advanced on a wild pitch.  She scored the game-winner when Samantha Tervo singled her home.  Ashley Merchant relieved Erin Hayes in the second inning and finished out the contest to earn her second win of the day.

ARC 3, Solano 1  3-3 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers put up three runs in their second at bat against the Falcons, and it was all they would need as Ashley Merchant pitched a complete-game four-hitter to pick up her first win of the season.  Martha Ballas singled in Merchant and Valerie Robinson, who had both reached base with hits, and then Ballas scored when Jacqueline Yarak singled.

february 8, 2007
Modesto 3, ARC 2   2-3 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers put together their best games of the early season, receiving a complete game from starting pitcher Erin Hayes and some timely hitting, but they fell to the Pirates in eight innings.  Hayes allowed only one earned run against Modesto, which came in the Pirates’ last at bat in the 8th.  ARC trailed 2-1 going into the 6th when Jennifer Munos doubled in a run to tie the score.  Munos finished the game with two hits.  ARC rebounded from the tough loss by scoring three runs in the 1st inning of the second game and led 4-1 in the 3rd when the game was called due to rain.

february 6, 2007
ARC 7, Los Medanos 3  2-2 Overall  0-0 Conference

The Beavers made it a sweep over the Mustangs by pounding out 10 hits en route to the win.  ARC had to come from behind with a five-run 6th to erase a one-run deficit.  Samantha Tervo led the attack with three hits—two doubles—and three runs batted in, and Martha Ballas and Kimberly Carpenter each collected two hits.  Carpenter also drove in three runs.

ARC 13, Los Medanos 2  1-2 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers rolled over the Mustangs to pick up their first win of the season.  Ashley Merchant and Erin Hayes both pitched in the win, allowing just three hits and one earned run.  Leading 4-2 going into the 4th, the ARC offense erupted for four runs and then followed with five more in the 5th.  Nicole Dawson and Valerie Robinson each finished with two hits; Dawson added three runs batted in while Robinson and Samantha Tervo both knocked in two runs.

february 2, 2007
San Jose City 5, ARC 4 0-2 Overall   0-0 Conference

In the second game, the Beavers picked up the offense, especially in the first inning when they brought across four runs, but two Jaguar runs in the bottom of the 7th gave them the sweep.  Ashley Merchant pitched well in her season debut.  The big blow by the offense came from the bat of Nicole Dawson, who hit a three-run home run in the 1st.  Martha Ballas finished the game with three hits, and Valerie Robinson had an RBI-single as ARC out hit San Jose City but could not produce enough runs.

San Jose City 10, ARC 1 0-1 Overall 0-0 Conference

The Beavers opened the season with a road loss to the Jaguars.  ARC collected only three hits in the first game of the doubleheader, and three errors led to four unearned runs.  Amber Lawhead, Martha Ballas, and Jacqueline Yarak each had a hit for ARC.
