Olympian, Jeanette Allred-Powless, was a three-time (age-group)
world record holder in running events back in the 1970’s. An alumnus
of American River College, she was the 1982 California Community
College
1500-meter champion, undefeated, with the nation’s fastest time for a
community college student-athlete. Returning to ARC in 2001, she now
leads the rich tradition of quality cross country and track teams.
Jeanette attended California State University, Northridge on a
track and field scholarship where she earned her BS in Commercial
Recreation/Small Business Administration. From there she went to Guam
where she began teaching aerobics and then became assistant manager of
a Clark Hatch Fitness Chain. She also began personal training and
hosting numerous running and triathlon events on Guam while continuing
her athletic competitions across the globe.
Allred-Powless qualified by winning three (3) consecutive Olympic
Trials for Guam in the women’s marathon in Seoul, Korea-1988,
Barcelona, Spain-1992, and Atlanta, Georgia-1996. She still holds
Guam’s Nations Best Olympic finish, with her 36th place
finish in the Barcelona Marathon. Also, Jeanette was awarded the honor
of top 10 female athletes of the century.
Another title included the Guam’s top triathlete. She met her
husband Jack, the nations top male triathlete, who has completed 13
Ironman Triathlons including seven (7) World Championships in Hawaii.
He was in the US Air Force and they were re-stationed to Hurlburt
Field, Florida. While in Florida, Jeanette became the physical fitness
director for the YMCA. She certified and trained both land and water
fitness instructors while teaching PE and developing personal training
and various other programs and activities.
Jeanette finished up her MS at the University of West Florida
before getting re-stationed to Beale AFB, CA. She began coaching and
teaching at Sierra College and was the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross
Country coach from 1998-2000. In 2001 she completed her full circle
and came back to her original roots at American River College.
In 2003, her kids, Shayna (age 9) and Neilson (age 7) were 2nd
and 3rd in the nation at the Ironkids National Triathlon
Championships. Their family resides in Roseville where all four
continue swimming, biking, and running.
Jeanette says one goal will be to "coach the ‘lady Beavers’ to
break my 1500 meter school record at ARC--that will be one of the
highlights of my coaching career."
